Misery Loves Company. Matthew 11:16-19

Some people, no matter what you do, are never satisfied. You try to please them but all they do is complain. They can take a great adventure and turn it in to a miserable trip. We had several vacations like that with our son. You would think any kid would enjoy Disneyland. Not Jesus. A plane trip to Florida and Bush Gardens? Nope. A Fourth of July outing to a festival with food, games and fireworks? Miserable. There were some good trips too. The two week road trip from Arizona to Michigan to meet the family shortly after we adopted him and camping trips near home were fun but the older he got, the less "enthusiastic" he became.
The Jewish people were never satisfied. No matter what God did to please them, all they did was complain. They nearly drove Moses crazy in the wilderness complaining about their accommodations even though they had just been freed from slavery. And they sulked and whined to God until He gave them a king. The following generations of kings was not always a good thing either.
The Jewish people wanted a Savior. They expected a Savior. The scriptures pointed to a Savior. The scriptures even pointed to John the Baptist to come first but they rejected him. Then, when Jesus came on the scene, they complain some more. It's no wonder Jesus left them to preach to the Gentiles.
Are you enthusiastic about the adventure of each new day? Or do you prefer to make others miserable so you have company? Do you accept Jesus or complain He's not enough? You can wander and complain in the wilderness or enter into His rest. The choice is yours.
Matthew 11:16-19
16 “To what can I compare this generation? It is like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends,
17 'We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t mourn.’
18 For John didn’t spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.”
Blessings, Cecilia
