1 Timothy 5 Wait on God for discernment

A Charge to Timothy
21I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to maintain these principles without bias, and to do nothing out of partiality.
22Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
23Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
24The sins of some men are obvious, going ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do not surface until later. 25In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even the ones that are inconspicuous cannot remain hidden.

A charge to Timothy, the seriousness of the job. A leader with a serious mission. This also reflects on our church leaders.

Laying on of hands if taken in context if referring to ordination in the ministry. Young and immature in the Lord are too quick at times to let things play out. A leader must be mature in the faith and have patience to wait on the Lord. Timothy is being reminded to be careful on selection of leaders in the church and to keep himself pure and above repute. Some believe the laying on hands refers to accepting sinners back into the church, if so they must fully repent so the church will be kept pure.

Pauls, medical advice to Timothy. Water in ancient days wasn't pure and most likely causing stomach problems with Timothy. Timothy was most likely abstaining from alcohol to set an example. The fermentation process removed some of the impurities of the water, so Paul was suggesting to Timothy to drink a little wine due to his stomach snd frequent ailments.

Guzik states:
 i. We all have areas of our lives God is dealing with; and sometimes the area is something clearly evident to others. But sometimes it is not evident; some people are regarded as holy just because they are good at hiding their sin!

b. Otherwise cannot be hidden: Good works are always eventually revealed; but sins are sometimes hidden, and will be evident only at the judgment. These words are meant to be a caution to Timothy in his appointing of leaders. Sometimes what one sees on the outside isn't really an accurate picture, so we need to take it slow, so we can wait on God for discernment.

What sin is God revealing in you today?

Blessings, David
