Hebrews 12- Are you grieving (quenching) the Holy Spirit?

A Call to Holiness
(1 Peter 1:13-21)
14Pursue peace with all men, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. 15Be careful that no one falls short of the grace of God, so that no root of bitterness will spring up to cause trouble and defile many. 16See to it that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.

How often do you study the Bible? I am a perfectionist and sometimes to my detriment. I accept this is the way the Lord made me.
This is the reason I read the Bible in order from front to back.

I have read many times about Esau selling his birthright for a meal but never connected the dots of his brother Jacob and his mothers trickery of pretending to be Esau, receiving the blessing from their father as Esau would have.
These verses imply God allowed Esau' birthright to be given to Jacob because of selling it for a meal! "For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected."

As followers of Jesus Christ you have been given a birthright! You are now the adoptive son and daughter of God. It's a promise that no one can revoke or take away, except for one thing, grieving (quenching) the Holy Spirit. By doing so you are in a sense selling your birthright.

I urge you to take the time and read this lecture on Grieving the Holy Spirit by Charles G. Finney.

Blessings, David

Let not your sense of sin make you think little of my Master. You are a great sinner, but He is a greater Saviour.

Charles Spurgeon
