No Mistake- Matthew 27:3-10 NLT

I've told you I like to look at prophecy. Here I found what appears to be a conflict. Verse 9 states "This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah" yet when I went to Jeremiah, the verses didn't seem to relate.

Here is what David Guzik says about this:
"Some think it could be a copyist error. Perhaps Matthew wrote Zechariah, but an early copyist mistakenly put Jeremiah instead, and this rare mistake was repeated in subsequent copies. Some think that Jeremiah spoke this prophecy and Zechariah recorded it – the word spoken by Jeremiah, but recorded by Zechariah. Some think that Matthew refers to scroll of Jeremiah, which included the book of Zechariah."

I think the last two are good explanations, but I lean toward the latter.

When God gave man the words to write in the Bible, He didn't tell man to start chapter one here or number that verse there. He gave man the words to write and they were recorded as though writing a letter. Man come in later and decided how the Word should be divided for easier reference. Some of those places of division may not be exactly as God intended.

What's important to me is that this action by Judas was prophesied long before Jesus and Judas walked the earth. I always find that amazing.

Matthew 27:3-10 NLT

Judas Hangs Himself

3 When Judas, who had betrayed Him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and the elders.  4 “I have sinned,” he declared, “for I have betrayed an innocent man.”

“What do we care?” they retorted. “That’s your problem.”

5 Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself.

6 The leading priests picked up the coins. “It wouldn’t be right to put this money in the Temple treasury,” they said, “since it was payment for murder.”   7 After some discussion they finally decided to buy the potter’s field, and they made it into a cemetery for foreigners.  8 That is why the field is still called the Field of Blood.  9 This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says,

“They took the thirty pieces of silver—the price at which He was valued by the people of Israel, 10 and purchased the potter’s field, as the LORD directed.”

Zechariah 11:12-13 NLT

12 And I said to them, “If you like, give me my wages, whatever I am worth; but only if you want to.”  So they counted out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.

13 And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—this magnificent sum at which they valued Me! So I took the thirty coins and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the LORD.

Blessings, Cecilia
