Matthew 2:19-23

Matthew 2:19-23
The Return to Nazareth
19 When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 20 “Get up!” the angel said. “Take the Child and his mother back to the land of Israel, because those who were trying to kill the Child are dead.”
21 So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus and his mother. 22 But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee.23 So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

Who were these prophets that said  “He will be called a Nazarene.”?
Isaiah 4:2 But in that day, the branch of the Lord
    will be beautiful and glorious;
the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory
of all who survive in Israel.
Isaiah 11: 1 Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—
yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
Jeremiah 23: 5 For the time is coming,”
    says the Lord,
“when I will raise up a righteous descendant
    from King David’s line.
He will be a King who rules with wisdom.
He will do what is just and right throughout the land.
Jeremiah 33:15 “In those days and at that time
I will raise up a righteous descendant  from King David’s line.
He will do what is just and right throughout the land.
Zechariah 3:8 “Listen to me, O Jeshua the high priest, and all you other priests. You are symbols of things to come. Soon I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.
Zechariah 6:12 Tell him, ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Here is the man called the Branch. He will branch out from where he is and build the Temple of the Lord.
The Branch is Jesus.
But none of these prophets specifically refer to the "Branch" being from Nazareth. So how do we make that conclusion from these verses?
The root for Nazareth is the Hebrew word that is translated "stem" in Isaiah 11:1 above states the stem (the only place the English word occurs in scripture) is the cut off stump of a tree or a stub. The rod growing from the stem is parallel to the Branch growing out of the roots. The rod and the Branch are a prophecy referring to Jesus Christ. The rod grows out of the stem--the cut-off portion of the tree--just as Jesus grew up in the town of Nazareth. The picture is of a tree that has been cut down and is considered dead. However, out of that stump comes new life in the form of a rod or branch. This points to the kingly line of David that had been cut down so that no one of his line sat on the throne of Israel. It also points to the spiritually lifeless town of Nazareth.
