The devil's purpose is to steal, kill and destroy,

James4:7 So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm
against him] and he will flee from you. 1Cor10:12 Therefore let the one who
thinks he stands firm [immune to temptation, being overconfident and
self-righteous], take care that he does not fall [into sin and
condemnation]. 1Peter5:8 Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be
alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls
around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to
devour.(AMP)

There are different enemies that Christians face everyday, sometimes it is
self, other times the world and often the devil. I believe that many give
more power and praise to the devil than what they should. There is a story
of a man sleeping and is awoken by the sound of the creaking of a rocking
chair. The man lights a candle, sees the devil, says "oh it is you", blows
out the candle and goes back to sleep. God allowed the devil some authority
over Job, and yet not complete control. God has all authority and we must
remember that. The devil's purpose is to steal, kill and destroy, and he
does not come with pointy horns and a cape, he can come as everything you
have ever wished for. May we pray for wisdom and discernment, the ability
to stand firm against the devil by the power of God.
