All or None. John 21:18-19

John 21 NLT
18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

All the disciples died a violent death except John. John did face his trials though. In one attempt to kill him, he was boiled in oil and survived. John died a peaceful death as an old man after being released from prison on the isle of Patmos.

Here Jesus tells Peter when he is old "you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don't want to go." Peter was later crucified. He requested to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to be crucified in the same manner as the Lord.

James was the brother of John. King Herod had James “put to death with the sword,” likely a reference to beheading. He was the first apostle to be martyred.

Matthew or Levi was killed by a sword wound while on missionary in Ethiopia.

James, the brother of Jesus (not officially an apostle), was the leader of the church in Jerusalem. He was thrown from the southeast pinnacle of the temple (over a hundred feet down) when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a club. This is thought to be the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the temptation.

Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, was flayed alive with knives while on missionary in what is now Turkey.

Andrew was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Greece. After being severely whipped, he was tied to the cross with cords to prolong his agony.

Thomas was stabbed with a spear during one of his missionary trips to India.

Matthias, the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.

Judas Iscariot hanged himself after he betrayed Jesus.

Paul, who became an apostle after Jesus' death, was tortured and then beheaded by the Emperor Nero in Rome in A.D. 67.

There are two stories about the death of James. One was that he was crucified in Egypt. The other is that he died a martyr and his body was sawed to pieces. He was the author of the book of James.

Jude or Thaddeus died a martyr in Persia.

Simon the Zealot was killed with arrows.

Phillip was the first apostle Jesus spoke the words "follow me" to. He died by hanging. Phillip requested his body be wrapped in papyrus rather than linen because he believed even his dead body was not worthy to be treated as Jesus' had.

Horrible ways to die. All were willing to live and die for the Gospel. All were willing to live and die for Jesus. None felt they were worthy to serve yet Jesus used them anyway. Jesus can use you anyway, even if your heart isn't fully committed to Him. You just have to allow Him to.

Blessings, Cecilia
