Garbage In, Garbage Out. Matthew 15:15-20 NLT

Who follows the six second rule? You know, you drop something on the floor or ground and if you pick it up fast enough, it's ok to eat?  After watching one of those shows testing that theory, I put it in the trash!

Washing your hands before you eat is another good practice to help eliminate germs that can make you sick. At Sunday school, when the kids have a snack, I give them each a little squirt of hand sanitizer first, not so much because I worry where their hands have been but to teach good hygiene.

But that was not the Pharisees concern when they tried to rebuke the disciples for not washing before they ate. They were talking about ceremonial washing, the showy symbolism that they thought made them better then everyone else.

Jesus is trying to tell them it's not what we feed our stomach that corrupts us, it's what we feed our mind. If you feed your mind garbage, garbage affects your heart and eventually it comes out of your mouth. What do you feed your mind that affects your heart? Look at Jesus's list below and then remember, garbage in  garbage out.

Matthew 15:15-20 NLT

15 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”

16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. 17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
