5If, however, she gives birth to a daughter, the woman will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstruation. Then she must continue in purification from her bleeding for sixty-six days.
The time for each phase was double of that when giving birth to a son. The mother was unclean for 14 days followed by 66 days. This means she had double the maternity leave to care for her daughter. (Guzik, paraphrased)
Even though the Lord doesn’t give His reasons for this some believe it’s because the daughter will eventually give birth to more sinners. Some say it was because daughters are usually smaller and needed more care while others believe the culture at the time, sons were more revered (prized) and the longer unclean period of time allowed the family more bonding time.
Whatever His reasons remember, Father knows best!
