Exodus 4:10-17 Unwillingness

10“Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue.”
11And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, sighted or blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.”
13But Moses replied, “Please, Lord, send someone else.”
14Then the LORD’s anger burned against Moses, and He said, “Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well, and he is now on his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help both of you to speak, and I will teach you what to do. 16He will speak to the people for you. He will be your spokesman, and it will be as if you were God to him. 17But take this staff in your hand so that you can perform signs with it.”

But, But.....send someone else. Was Moses the first butthead? LOL.

“Thus Moses’ complaint was not in defective articulation, but in his inability to take command of Hebrew and Egyptian (cf. Ezekiel 3:5, where ‘heavy of tongue’ = difficulty with a foreign language… ).” (Kaiser)

We get to the truth, Moses wasn’t slow of speech and tongue! He was unwilling!
“Then the LORD’s anger burned against Moses,” because of his unwillingness!
“It’s common for men to give pretended reasons instead of one real one.” (Benjamin Franklin)

The Lord appoints Aaron to help Moses and he becomes the first news reader. Hear ye, hear ye!
But think of what happens later, Aaron leads the first rebellion by fashioning the golden calf. Could it be the Lord gave Moses his brother Aaron as a reminder of his unwillingness?
Exodus 32:4He took the gold from their hands, and with an engraving tool he fashioned it into a molten calf. And they said, “O Israel, these are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”

Let’s examine our hearts.
Is there something we have been unwilling to do for the Lord?

Blessings, David
