40 Days. Genesis 7:17-24 NLT

The number 40 in the Bible is associated with purification. In Exodus we see Moses go up the mountain of God, Mount Sinai, and spend 40 days and nights in God's presence being prepared to lead His people to the promised land.

Exodus 24:18 Then Moses disappeared into the cloud as he climbed higher up the mountain. He remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

And when Moses prayed for His people Israel.

Deuteronomy 9:25 “That is why I threw myself down before the LORD for forty days and nights—for the LORD said he would destroy you.

The number 40 is also associated with preparation. The team of 12 spend 40 days exploring the promised land before returning with their report.

Numbers 13:25 After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned

And God purified His unbelieving, untrusting people before the next generation was allowed to enter into His rest in their new land. A land flowing with milk and honey.

Numbers 14: 33 And your children will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness for forty years.

Numbers 32:13 “The LORD was angry with Israel and made them wander in the wilderness for forty years until the entire generation that sinned in the LORD’s sight had died.

Elijah was prepared for his 40 days journey. The Lord sustained him because he trusted and believed.

1 King 19:8 So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai,  the mountain of God.

And Jesus prepared for His ministry, fasting and praying, being tempted and tried, for 40 days before He began the work He was sent to do.

Mark 1:13 where He was tempted by Satan for forty days.

So Noah, trusting God, prepared for his journey, built and boarded the ark. Then God purified the world through a flood, a purifying baptism, so to speak.

Genesis 7:17-24 NLT

17 For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth.
