Numbers 14:13-14 “O Lord”

 13But Moses said to the LORD, “The Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought this people from among them. 14And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have already heard that You, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, that You, O LORD, have been seen face to face, that Your cloud stands over them, and that You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

“O Lord”

When the term “O Lord” is used it’s a petition (prayer) to God! 

Daniel 9:19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For Your sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people bear Your name.”

Are you in anguish, do you need prayer? Let your petition (prayer) begin with O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!

O Lord is used many times throughout the Bible when petitioning the Lord.

Many including David, Daniel, Isiah, Samuel, Moses and even the men that threw Jonah overboard petitioned with “O Lord”.

O Lord, I lift up everyone who reads this devotional and ask that You bless their day and families. In Jesus name I pray.

Numbers 14:10b-12 A Plague

 Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the Israelites at the Tent of Meeting. 11And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people treat Me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in Me, despite all the signs I have performed among them? 12I will strike them with a plague and destroy them—and I will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they are.”

A Plague

“It is a dreadful mischief that there should be a plague in the heart, for a plague is a dreadful thing. A plague means, first, something which brings pain, and there is many a secret heartache in this world where we least suspect it. If you could take the roofs off the houses of London, strange sights would be seen, but if once you could proceed to put a window into every heart, some of those whose faces look gladdest would appear to us to be among the most miserable of men. The plague of the heart means pain, care, worry, grief, and trouble of mind. But it means more than that, for the plague is a disease.” (C. H. Spurgeon)

The Israelites had a plague in the heart and treated the Lord with contempt but

Moses will intercede for the them again to save them from the wrath of God.

Numbers 14:10 “A Dog”

 10But the whole congregation threatened to stone Joshua and Caleb.

A Dog

“IT is a rough name that, “Caleb.” Most translators say it signifies “a dog.” But what matters a man’s name? Possibly the man himself was somewhat rough—many of the heartiest of men are so. As the unpolished oyster yet bears within itself the priceless pearl, so oftentimes ruggedness of exterior covers worth. A dog, moreover, is not all badness, though, “Without are dogs and sorcerers.” It has this virtue, that it follows its master, and therein this Caleb was well-named, for never dog so followed his master as Caleb followed his God. As we have seen the faithful dog following his master when he is on horseback through mud, and mire, and dirt, for many a weary mile, even though the horses heels might wound him, so Caleb keeps close to God, and even if stoning threatens him, yet is he well content to follow the Lord fully.” (C H Spurgeon)

I’ve had dogs most of my life, they are faithful indeed, always loving, always seeking their master and will die to protect them. A well trained dog is a must but a stubborn dog is a thorn. I had such a stubborn dog and I was at wits end. When she would get mad, she would come in the house and look you in the eyes, squat and relieve herself. Someone mentioned a book to my wife, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: written by The Monks of New Skete. It would address specific problems with three remedies. One particular day we were on the last remedy and it was raining hard. I placed her dog igloo in the middle of the back yard, drove a stake into the ground and chained her to it. Instead of going in her igloo she sat in the rain with her back to us and every once in a while she would glance over her shoulder at us in the house. I left her there all night. As soon as I unhooked the chain she came in the house and squatted. Back out to the chain for another night! That broke her stubbornness and she became a well trained faithful dog.

We are no different, the Lord disciplines us until we do what He wants.

Are you stubborn like Jonah, or faithful like Caleb?

Numbers 14:5-9 Facedown or stand up!

 5Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel.

6Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7and said to the whole congregation of Israel, “The land we passed through and explored is an exceedingly good land. 8If the LORD delights in us, He will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and He will give it to us. 9Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid of the people of the land, for they will be like bread for us. Their protection has been removed, and the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them!”

Facedown or stand up!

Moses and Aaron fell facedown in prayer to the Lord and if they had said anything to the people the response wouldn’t have been good!

But Joshua and Caleb stand up for the Lord and His promise! 

But how do the people respond to them? Stay tuned!

When the people around us rebel against the Lord we should either follow Moses and Aaron example, fall facedown in prayer to the Lord or stand up to them like Joshua and Caleb! Follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance not the crowd!

Joshua and Caleb will be rewarded for their faith.

Numbers 14:3-4 Slave-minded people!

 3Why is the LORD bringing us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will become plunder. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4So they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”

“God led Israel through a process intended to change them from a slave-minded people to be a “promised-land” people. Here, they completely revert back to their slave mentality, preferring slavery under cruel, murdering masters than the walk of faith God has for them.” (Guzik)

Slave-minded people 

The Israelites rejected their walk in faith! 

They preferred the slave-minded people over the promised-land people!

We are also slave-minded people before our faith in Christ!

After accepting Jesus, because of our faith in Him we are set free from the slave-minded people and become family with the Jesus-minded people!

But sadly, the worldly see us a hypocritical-minded people because some of us reject our faith and are still slaves to sin!

Oh you hypocrite!

🦥 Jude 1:7 Sloth 🦥

 What do you think of when you hear the word “sloth”? Two things immediately come to my mind. There is the cute animal from South and Central America. (I really think sloths get a bad wrap.)They’re just very slow moving, methodical in their movements. I’ve gotten that way as I’ve gotten older, more deliberate in my movements so as not to get hurt or do damage. 

The other thought that comes to mind is laziness, or as the dictionary defines it “disinclination to action or labor”.  

There is another definition of sloth that I wasn’t aware of. Maybe I’ve heard it before and forgotten. It’s “spiritual apathy and inactivity” and it’s a sin. 

Wow, that one hit me right between the eyes. Surprisingly, as I began to search for deeper explanations of spiritual apathy or inactivity I didn’t find much. The closest I came was procrastination, putting off doing what we know we should do. 

So if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and do nothing about it that’s a sin. If you go to church on Sunday and behave like the world the rest of the week it’s a sin. If you don’t use the talents God gave you to further His kingdom it’s a sin. 

What are you doing for Jesus today? 

Pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. The 7 deadly sins.

Jude 1:7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Numbers 14:1-2 REBELLION

 1Then the whole congregation lifted up their voices and cried out, and that night the people wept. 2All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!

Rebellion 

Why were the spies sent and why did Moses foolishly agree?

The idea of sending spy’s didn’t originate with Moses or God but the people.

One spy from each tribe fully represented the whole people.

All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, if only we had died in this wilderness!

The fact is, the Israelites were rebelling against the God and grumbling against His promise!

God is going to give them their wish! Stay tuned!

Numbers 13:32-33 Witnesses

32So they gave the Israelites a bad report about the land that they had spied out: “The land we explored devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw there are great in stature. 33We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak that come from the Nephilim! We seemed like grasshoppers in our own sight, and we must have seemed the same to them!”

Witnesses 

The Israelites witnessed the plagues in Egypt. They witnessed the Red Sea parted. They witnessed manna from Heaven. They witnessed water come out if a rock. They had witnessed a pillar of fire 🔥 by night and a pillar of cloud ⛅️ by day. 

What else would the Lord have to do to prove He was in control and would keep his promise about the promised land?

Are we any different?

We are witnesses of the salvation through Jesus Christ but we continue to sin daily even though the Holy Spirit grieves us not to!

Make an effort today to sin-less and to be His light, His witnesses!

Numbers 13:28-32 Listen to the Lord or man?

 28Nevertheless, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified. We even saw the descendants of Anak there. 29The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan.”

30Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We must go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly conquer it!”

31But the men who had gone up with him replied, “We cannot go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are!”

Listen to the Lord or man?

Have you ever wanted to do something for the Lord and everyone around you discouraged you? But just like Caleb, you knew you could do it!

That’s how it was when we adopted our son, friends and family told us we were crazy that we shouldn’t do it.

Caleb knew in his heart that the Lord was with them and with Him nothing was impossible. But the men replied, we cannot!

If the Lord is nudging you to do something, listen to the Lord, not man! 

What will happen to these men for their disbelief?

Numbers 13:25-27 Report!

 25After forty days the men returned from spying out the land, 26and they went back to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back a report for the whole congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.

27And they gave this account to Moses: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and indeed, it is flowing with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit!

Report!

We’ve all done them for school or work, but who has done them secretly as a spy in the land? To secretly perform an assessment. There was a television show where the owner would disguise themselves and hire into a job to access their business and employees. They learned firsthand what the employees thought of the owner, the boss and the business.

We will see in upcoming devotionals what the Israelites thought of the Lord. They had seen and been a partaker in His miracles!

Will they put their trust in Him to keep His promise?

Numbers 13:23-24 Cluster of Graces!

 23When they came to the Valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes, which they carried on a pole between two men. They also took some pomegranates and figs. 24Because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut there, that place was called the Valley of Eshcol.

“the word "Eschol" signifying a "cluster"; and this cluster was typical of Christ, who may be compared to this, as he is to a cluster of camphire, Sol 1:14; there being in him a "cluster" of all perfections, of all the perfections of deity, the whole fulness of the Godhead dwelling bodily in him; and of all human perfections, he being in all things like unto his people, excepting sin; and there being also a cluster of all the graces and gifts of the Spirit without measure in him, as man; and of all the blessings of grace for his people, as Mediator; and of all the exceeding great and precious promises of the covenant of grace.” (Gills Exposition)

Numbers 13:21-22 Anak-Giants!

 21So they went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo-hamath. 22They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, dwelled. It had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

Who was Anak?

Anak is the son of Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.

Joshua 14:15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, after Arba, the greatest man among the Anakim.) Then the land had rest from war.

The Anakims were men of great size whom Caleb had driven out from Hebron.

Joshua 15: 13According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) 14And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak—the descendants of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

Will I immediately Go To Heaven When I die? Part 2

 Why did I write this article? Because the Holy Spirit put on my heart to do it because there are some who are trying to gain financially by writing and publishing books about, “You don’t go to heaven when you die” and there are others who profess the same.

I don’t need to defend the Bible, that’s the Lords job.

I’ve given you the verses, you can believe or disbelieve the writers of these verses.

I happen to believe as the Holy Spirit has guided me.

Why do I use the Berean Bible? Because I believe it’s the most accurate to date, look it up.

You will notice that the disbelievers don’t refute each of the verses I’ve given in the article. To do so would be calling out John, Luke, Paul, Timothy, instead they attack the messenger. 

I’ve had two different pastors over the last twenty years and both agree that a believers soul immediately goes to heaven when their earthly body (tent) dies.

I submitted my article to my pastor before posting and this was his response.

“I think this article is tight on the money! Our soul immediately goes to heaven when we die as believers”.

Nicodemus also didn’t understand spiritual, heavenly things......

John 3: 12If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

Will I Immediately Go To Heaven When I die?

 There are some who believe our soul sleeps until the last day when the dead are raised. I believe they are confusing the physical resurrection with our spirit, our soul.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say our soul sleeps!

John 11: 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. (“Will live”, your soul. “Even though he dies”, your physical body)

Philippians 1: 23I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed. (Paul, to live with Christ)

2 Corinthians 5: 1Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

2 Corinthians 5: 8We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. (Immediately with Jesus)

2 Timothy 4: 6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing. (On that day! The day of his death!)

Luke 23: 43And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” (Thief on the cross, TODAY!)

Rich man and poor man. Where did they immediately go when they died?

Luke 16: 22One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

24So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’

25But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony. 26And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’ (This was their souls, the final day of resurrection hasn’t happened yet!)

Acts 7: 55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

57At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him. 58They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep. (His body fell asleep, his soul was greeted by Jesus. Notice that Jesus was standing! Scriptures say He is seated to the right hand of the Father. Hebrews 12:2) He stood up to greet Stephen into heaven.

A Glutton and a Drunkard Jude 1:7

 Darkness gives way to light. The stage is set. We see mountains in the distance, vast desert and a wall made from large boulders. A group of people, young and old, male and female stand in a large circle. One man, a leader of the community, picks up a large stone. Other men follow suite. The leader lifts the stone over his head with both hands and hurls it with great force at the object of sin, a young man, laying in the dirt at the center of the circle. The rest of the men do the same. Over and over and over until the man on the ground is an unrecognizable mass of bloody pulp. Deuteronomy 21:21

The sin this young man committed? Gluttony. The greedy excessive overindulgence in something that becomes an idol. It’s referred to as “the lust of the flesh”. Gluttony goes hand in hand with food, drink and laziness. It’s a wasted life. 

Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

Numbers 13:17-20 Strong or Weak?

 17When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, he told them, “Go up through the Negev and into the hill country. 18See what the land is like and whether its people are strong or weak, few or many. 19Is the land where they live good or bad? Are the cities where they dwell open camps or fortifications? 20Is the soil fertile or unproductive? Are there trees in it or not? Be courageous, and bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)

Strong or weak?

Let’s face it, people are cruel. When I started school I first went to kindergarten and standing in line to leave, on a show and tell day a girl grabbed an record out of my hands and purposely broke it. Then in grade school, a classmate came from behind and ripped a loop of the back of my shirt which started a fist fight. In ninth grade I was in another fist fight. In high school, another fist fight but after that one I was pretty much left alone because a bee 🐝 stings.

We’re you considered strong or weak?

With Jesus Christ I prefer to be a strong Christian than a weak Christian by keeping in the word daily and writing these devotionals. If I don’t I will revert to my worldly sinful ways.

One thing I fear is that I haven’t done enough for Jesus and His kingdom. I’m not a good evangelist and when I get involved in ministry my steam-stamina runs out after about a year.

I’m encouraged by Matthew 5: 9Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called sons of God.

This verse would make a Bible study by itself but it inspired me so much I had it on my license plate.

Evil Desires Jude 1:7

 LUST. 

Lust is not just uncontrolled, intense, illicit, sexual desire or appetite but lust is to have a strong or excessive yearning, desire or craving for something in an unhealthy way. 

Is there something in your life that you are lusting after in an unhealthy way? It could be money, it could be fame, it could be a substance or it could be a person. 

I think Colossians 3:5 sums up beautifully how a Christian should respond to lust. “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires.

Numbers 13:1-16 Names

 1And the LORD said to Moses, 2“Send out for yourself men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each of their fathers’ tribes send one man who is a leader among them.”3So at the consent of the LORD, Moses sent them out from the Wilderness of Paran. All the men were leaders of the Israelites, 4and these were their names:..........Shammua, Shaphat, Caleb, Igal, Hoshea (Joshua), Palti, Gaddi, Sethur, Nahbi, and Geuel......16These were the names of the men Moses sent to spy out the land; and Moses gave to Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.

Numbers 12:13-16 Sin and Prayer

 13So Moses cried out to the LORD, “O God, please heal her!”

14But the LORD answered Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Let her be confined outside the camp for seven days; after that she may be brought back in.”

15So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until she was brought in again. 16After that, the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the Wilderness of Paran.

Sin and prayer

Moses prays for Miriam!

Do you pray for your accusers? We could all learn from Moses!

The Lord answers but allows her leprosy to continue for seven days so the whole nation knows what she did!

Our sin affects others, in Miriam’s case the people had to wait until her confinement and healing was complete before moving on.

Numbers 12:10-12 Leprosy, A Reflection of Her Heart!

 10As the cloud lifted from above the Tent, suddenly Miriam became leprous, white as snow. Aaron turned toward her, saw that she was leprous, 11and said to Moses, “My lord, please do not hold against us this sin we have so foolishly committed. 12Please do not let her be like a stillborn infant whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.”

Leprosy, a reflection of her heart!

“Leprosy was a disease of bodily decay and corruption; it was considered to be a “walking death” - and Miriam had a seriously advanced case of leprosy instantly. At this moment, God caused her body to reflect her heart.” (Guzik)

Aaron turned....and saw....

Aaron apparently was the first to notice, even before Miriam. 

Leprosy kills the nerves, so the affected can’t feel anything which is dangerous in itself. 

Judging is sinful and a reflection of our heart.

But we aren’t God, the maker of heaven and earth. 

If we had His ability to discipline and punish, how many of us would be lepers?

Painful Resentment Jude 1:7

 It’s one of the 10 commandments. “You shall not covet” Exodus 20:17

Covetousness, envious, jealousy or resentment, whichever word you choose to use, it’s still an ugly heart condition. 

Merriam-Webster defines envy as “painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage”.

Ouch! Painful or resentful!  Yet, who hasn’t been envious of someone at one time or another in their life. I still remember a time in elementary school I was envious of something someone else had. It didn’t end well for me.

Numbers 12:6-9 UH OH Moment!

I, the LORD, will reveal Myself to him in a vision;

I will speak to him in a dream.

7But this is not so with My servant Moses;

he is faithful in all My house.

clearly and not in riddles;

Uh Oh Moment! 

“Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married” and the anger of the Lord burned against them....

Luke 6:42 How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

We all need to remember to pull the beam out of our own eye before we criticize someone in ministry and their choice in a spouse!

After all, if the Holy Spirit is leading them are you not criticizing the Lord?
