John 7
Jesus Promises Living Water
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to Me! 38 Anyone who believes in Me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from His heart.’” 39 (When He said “living water,” He was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in Him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
In chapter 4 we saw that the Holy Spirit is God. Now we are introduced to the Holy Spirit flowing from us. How does this happen? I love the following story. I think it is a great illustration of what the Holy Spirit can do in a person's life.
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed."
How do we feed the Holy Spirit? Reading the Bible, attending Church and Bible Study, fellowship with other believers and prayer are great ways to start. When we feed the Holy Spirit, God's spirit grows inside of us. As God's Spirit grows in us, as we become closer to God and His Spirit naturally starts to flow from us. This is the living water Jesus is talking about.
Blessings, Cecilia
