John 11
1 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling Him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.” 4 But when Jesus heard about it He said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” 5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 He stayed where He was for the next two days.
When I received the call my father was sick I dropped everything and was on a plane from Arizona to Michigan in just a few hours.
When my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer I kept my promise to be there for her every step of the way.
It's what we do. We are there for the people we love. We go through the trials and hardships with them. We give support, we help in any way we can. We express our love to them.
So why, when Jesus heard Lazarus was sick did He wait two days before He traveled to him? We know the answer because scripture tells us "it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” What else was Jesus trying to teach Mary, Martha and us through Lazarus death?
What we want for ourselves is not always what's best for us. Jesus knows what's best for us. I believe Jesus is trying to teach us through this example that He has a plan and when trials and hardships come, He is there with us, expressing His love to us. He was with me as my father was dying, giving me peace, helping me through that heart breaking time. He was with my sister as she had surgery, went through chemotherapy and now radiation giving her strength when she thinks she can't take anymore. He is with you in whatever you are going through right now, offering help, expressing His love.
All we have to do is trust Him. All we have to do is accept His help. All we have to do is love Him back. Because really, Jesus knows best.
Blessings, Cecilia
