Joshua 11:7-9 Hamstrung

7So by the waters of Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them, 8and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, leaving no survivors. 9Joshua treated them as the LORD had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned up their chariots.

“Joshua fought with boldness and strategy, he surprised them with an unexpected ambush. Joshua fought with obedience, doing exactly what the LORD told him to do, even destroying the Canaanite weapons (the horses and the chariots) instead of taking them for his own army.” (Guzik)

Hamstrung

“To hamstring an animal means to cripple it by severing the large tendon at the back of the knee on the hind legs. These tendons are unable to heal or reunite. To hamstring a horse would render the animal incapable of any useful work after that.”

Psalm 20:7 (ESV) 7  Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

The Lord didn’t want Joshua and his army to use the weapons of war, horses and chariots like his opposing armies did. He wanted them to trust in the name of the Lord!

Christian where do you place your trust, in the things of man or in the name of the Lord our God?

Dear Heavenly Father, I lift everyone up that is reading this devotional including myself, please help us put our trust in You and not in the things of man. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
