22Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. 23For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, 24and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does.
iv. “I fear we have many such in all congregations; admiring hearers, affectionate hearers, attached hearers, but all the while unblest hearers, because they are not doers of the word.” (Spurgeon)
v. “The doctrines of God, faithfully preached, are such a mirror; he who hears cannot help discovering his own character, and being affected with his own deformity; he sorrows, and purposes amendment; but when the preaching is over, the mirror is removed . . . he soon forgets what manner of man he was . . . he reasons himself out of the necessity of repentance and amendment of life, and thus deceives his soul.” (Clarke)
Are you a good Christian on Sunday but Monday through Saturday you returned to yourself, selfish with evil desires? The world watches you even when you think no one is looking. They see, and call you a hypocrite for your belief on Sunday but lost the rest of the week. Polish the mirror and look into it daily. Don't be a forgetful hearer of the word, read and study it before your day begins putting on your armor. If you can't read the word, listen to it while driving to work.
Don't deceive your soul. Stop being a hypocrite! Become a doer of the word.
Blessings, David
