13When God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater to swear by, He swore by Himself, 14saying, “I will surely bless you and multiply your descendants.”c 15And so Abraham, after waiting patiently, obtained the promise.
16Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and their oath serves as a confirmation to end all argument. 17So when God wanted to make the unchanging nature of His purpose very clear to the heirs of the promise, He guaranteed it with an oath. 18Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged.
19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and steadfast. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20where Jesus our forerunner has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
Abraham is used as an example of Gods promise to demonstrate that He cannot lie. God gave a promise in the form of an oath. A strong promise with a guarantee!
Since it is impossible for God to lie we can take hold of the hope set before us.
The term anchor for the soul is used because without an anchor a boat will be adrift in the sea, it won't be able to navigate a course. The hope keeps us anchored through life navigating a course God has set before us, firm and steadfast.
Our hope is Jesus. His death on the cross tore the curtain guarding the inner sanctuary and that tear gave us access to God.
Matthew 27:50 When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit. 51At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
Grab hold of your anchor, your hope in Jesus Christ, your promise from God!
Blessings, David
