Ruth 3:6-7 Good Reason

”So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law instructed her. And after Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was cheerful, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.“ Ruth‬ ‭3‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

a. He went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain: There was a good reason why Boaz slept at the threshing floor. These were the days of the Judges when there was much political and social instability in Israel. It wasn’t unusual for gangs of thieves to come and steal all the hard-earned grain a farmer had grown. Boaz slept at the threshing floor to guard his crop against the kind of attacks described in 1 Samuel 23:1.

”Then they told David, saying, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and they are robbing the threshing floors.”“

‭‭I Samuel‬ ‭23‬:‭1‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

b. She came softly: Ruth did just as her mother-in-law Naomi had recommended. She heard the advice, she said she would do it, and she did it.

Good Reason

I’ve never associated sleeping at the threshing floor with guarding the grain but it makes sense considering the times. Ruth also had a good reason for following Naomi’s advice, she was requesting of Boaz her kinsman-redeemer as the  recognized goel for the family of Elimelech to marry her.

How many times have we’ve done something with good reason because it seemed good to us, but never considered if it was good in the eyes of the Lord?

Blessings
