Numbers 30:9 Widow or Divorced Woman

9Every vow a widow or divorced woman pledges to fulfill is binding on her.

“A widow or divorced woman had no male “head” of her household (her “head” is God directly), so she is bound by her vows.” (Guzik)

Who is the head of the household according to the Bible?

Numbers 30:6-8 Married Woman’s Vow

6If a woman marries while under a vow or rash promise by which she has bound herself, 7and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. 8But if her husband prohibits her when he hears of it, he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise she has made, and the LORD will absolve her.

“A married woman’s vow was not taken as binding, unless ratified in some way by her husband, who had the right to overrule her.” (Guzik)

Have you ever made a vow that you didn’t keep?

Numbers 30:3-5 Young Unmarried Woman’s Vow

3And if a woman in her father’s house during her youth makes a vow to the LORD or obligates herself by a pledge, 4and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. 5But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her.

“An unmarried woman’s vow was not taken as binding, unless approved of in some way by her “head” - her father, who had the right to overrule her.” (Guzik)

Numbers 30:1-2 Integrity

1Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded: 2If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.

Moses explains what the Lord commanded so the heads, leaders of the tribes could explain it to the people.

“A vow before God is no small thing. God expressly commanded that Israel should be careful to keep its vows, and to fulfill every oath made.” (Guzik)

But Jesus said; Matthew 5: 34But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35or by the earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the evil one.

“But, in context of the rest of Scripture, we see that Jesus was not forbidding oaths, as much as telling us that we should be so filled with integrity in our words that an oath is unnecessary.” (Guzik)

“Jesus answered under oath in a court (Matthew 26:63-64), and God Himself swears oaths (Luke 1:73, Acts 2:30, Hebrews 3:18, 6:13, 17).” (Guzik)

Ecclesiastes 5: 4When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it, because He takes no pleasure in fools. Fulfill your vow. 5It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it.

Do you see the theme here? It’s best to have integrity in your words that it’s unnecessary to make a vow but if you make a vow have the integrity to keep it!

I’m guilty, are you?

Numbers 29:40 Lamb of God

40So Moses spoke all this to the Israelites just as the LORD had commanded him.

“Significantly, now as Israel was on the threshold of the Promised Land, they needed to be reminded of the essential place of sacrifice. Promised Land people know they need an atoning sacrifice and they remember it often.

For Israel to obey what God commanded in Numbers 28 and 29, it meant that every year, the priests sacrificed on 1,086 lambs, 113 bulls, 32 rams, more than a ton of flour, and some 1,000 bottles of oil and wine on behalf of the nation.” (Guzik)

The lamb was the most prominent sacrificial animal and “in the days of Jesus  there is a record of 255,600 Passover lambs being sacrificed at one Passover just by individuals and households.” (Guzik)

Animal sacrifice only covered sin and was a prophetic reference to the perfect sacrifice that removes sin, Jesus!

Lamb of God!

John 1: 29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

1 Corinthians 5: 7Get rid of the old leaven, that you may be a new unleavened batch, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

Have you accepted Jesus as the lamb of God?

Numbers 29:17-39 Feast of Tabernacles

17On the second day you are to present twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, … one male goat…

20On the third day you are to present eleven bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old,…one male goat…

23On the fourth day you are to present ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old,…one male goat…

26On the fifth day you are to present nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old,…one male goat….

29On the sixth day you are to present eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old,…one male goat

32On the seventh day you are to present seven bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old,…one male goat….

35On the eighth day you are to hold a solemn assembly; you must not do any regular work. 36As a pleasing aroma to the LORD, you are to present an offering made by fire, a burnt offering of one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old,…. one male goat….

39You are to present these offerings to the LORD at your appointed times, in addition to your vow and freewill offerings, whether burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, or peace offerings.”

I abbreviated the above verses to point out, bring attention to, all the animals!

Sin has a high price!

“God required so many animals and such expensive sacrifice because the Feast of Tabernacles was a happy memorial of God’s faithfulness to Israel during the Exodus. The sacrifice of so many animals was a demonstration of the richness of God’s provision to them through the years in the wilderness.” (Guzik)

Jesus was the perfect, final sacrifice!

Numbers 29:12-16 Feast of the Ingathering

 The Feast of Tabernacles

(Deuteronomy 16:13–17)

12On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work, and you shall observe a feast to the LORD for seven days.

13As a pleasing aroma to the LORD, you are to present an offering made by fire, a burnt offering of thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old, all unblemished, 14along with the grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil with each of the thirteen bulls, two-tenths of an ephah with each of the two rams, 15and a tenth of an ephah with each of the fourteen lambs. 16Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.

The Feast of Tabernacles takes place on the 15th of the Hebrew month Tishri. This was the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar and usually occurs in late September to mid-October. The feast begins five days after the Day of Atonement and at the time the fall harvest had just been completed.

Sometimes called the Feast of the Ingathering, the Feast to the Lord, or the Feast of Booths when Jewish males were commanded to go to Jerusalem, it was also the time when they brought their tithes and offerings to the Temple.

Our church celebrates the “Ingathering” as the Thanksgiving holiday and it seems appropriate and biblical at the time the fall harvest had just been completed.

Numbers 29:7-11 The Day of Atonement

 The Day of Atonement

(Leviticus 16:1–34Leviticus 23:26–32)

7On the tenth day of this seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you must not do any work.

8Present as a pleasing aroma to the LORD a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, all unblemished, 9together with their grain offerings of fine flour mixed with oil—three-tenths of an ephah with the bull, two-tenths of an ephah with the ram, 10and a tenth of an ephah with each of the seven lambs.

11Include one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering of atonement and the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offerings.

“The Day of Atonement was not a happy feast. It was a day to carefully consider the burden of sin, and to put it away on a national basis through the appointed sacrifice for that day.” (Guzik)

“The Day of Atonement (Leviticus 23:27-28), also known as Yom Kippur, was the most solemn holy day of all the Israelite feasts and festivals, occurring once a year on the tenth day of Tishri, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. On that day, the high priest was to perform elaborate rituals to atone for the sins of the people.”

https://www.gotquestions.org/Day-Atonement-Yom-Kippur.html

Jesus Christ was our high priest, our perfect sacrifice, our “atonement” when we accept Him as our Lord and Savior!

Hebrews 7: 27Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people; He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself.

John 19: 30When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.

Hebrews 10: 1For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the realities themselves. It can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2If it could, would not the offerings have ceased? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt the guilt of their sins.

3Instead, those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, 4because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said:

“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,

but a body You prepared for Me.

6In burnt offerings and sin offerings

You took no delight.

7Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me in the scroll:

I have come to do Your will, O God.’ ”a

8In the passage above He says, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire, nor did You delight in them” (although they are offered according to the law). 9Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second. 10And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11Day after day every priest stands to minister and to offer again and again the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God.

Have you made atonement through Jesus Christ?

Numbers 29:1-6 Feast of the Trumpets!

The Feast of Trumpets

(Leviticus 23:23–25)

1“On the first day of the seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly, and you must not do any regular work. This will be a day for you to sound the trumpets.

2As a pleasing aroma to the LORD, you are to present a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, all unblemished, 3together with their grain offerings of fine flour mixed with oil—three-tenths of an ephaha with the bull, two-tenths of an ephahb with the ram, 4and a tenth of an ephahc with each of the seven male lambs.

5Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. 6These are in addition to the monthly and daily burnt offerings with their prescribed grain offerings and drink offerings. They are a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD.

“The Feast of Trumpets marked the beginning of ten days of consecration and repentance before God. It is one of seven Jewish feasts or festivals appointed by the LORD and one of three feasts that occur in the autumn.” (Got questions.org)

Jesus’s second coming will be accompanied by the sound of a trumpet!

1 Corinthians 15: 51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

1 Thessalonians 4: 16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

Seven trumpets in Revelation 8,9,10 and 11. Are you prepared?

Numbers 28:26-31 Feast of Pentecost

 The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost)

(Deuteronomy 16:9–12)

26On the day of firstfruits, when you present an offering of new grain to the LORD during the Feast of Weeks, hyou are to hold a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.

27Present a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old as a pleasing aroma to the LORD, 28together with their grain offerings of fine flour mixed with oil—three-tenths of an ephah with each bull, two-tenths of an ephah with the ram, 29and a tenth of an ephah with each of the seven lambs.

30Include one male goat to make atonement for you. 31Offer them with their drink offerings in addition to the regular burnt offering and its grain offering. The animals must be unblemished.

“The primary meaning of the Feast of Pentecost was not atonement, but thanksgiving for the harvest. Yet every feast of Israel was to carry with it the idea of atonement. Just the same, our own life should be lived in constant awareness of the atonement made for us.” (Guzik)

Numbers 28:16-25 Passover, Feast and Sin Offering

16The fourteenth day of the first month is the LORD’s Passover. 17On the fifteenth day of this month, there shall be a feast; for seven days unleavened bread is to be eaten.

18On the first day there is to be a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work. 19Present to the LORD an offering made by fire, a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, all unblemished. 20The grain offering shall consist of fine flour mixed with oil; offer three-tenths of an ephah with each bull, two-tenths of an ephah with the ram, 21and a tenth of an ephah with each of the seven lambs. 22Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you.

23You are to present these in addition to the regular morning burnt offering. 24Offer the same food each day for seven days as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD. It is to be offered with its drink offering and the regular burnt offering.

25On the seventh day you shall hold a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.

“In addition to the lamb each household was to offer to God, the priests were also required to bring these offerings to God at the time of Passover on behalf of the entire nation.” (Guzik)

In a nutshell, you either have to follow all of the OT Laws with the sacrifices, sin offerings and atonement or accept the Lamb of God for your sin offering and atonement. The OT sacrifices for atonement only covered sin, but Jesus’s sacrifice for atonement removes sin.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

How do you make atonement?

Numbers 28:11-15 New Moon

11At the beginning of every month, you are to present to the LORD a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, all unblemished, 12along with three-tenths of an ephah of fine floure mixed with oil as a grain offering with each bull, two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering with the ram, 13and a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering with each lamb. This is a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD.

14Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine with each bull, a third of a hing with the ram, and a quarter hin with each lamb. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon throughout the year.

15In addition to the regular burnt offering with its drink offering, one male goat is to be presented to the LORD as a sin offering.

“Later in Israel’s history, the New Moon festivals may have become opportunities for excess, for licentious behavior. In the Prophets there are times when God says to his erring people, ‘I hate your New Moons’ (cf. Isaiah 1:14).” (Allen)

1 Samuel 20: 5So David told him, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon, and I am supposed to dine with the king. Instead, let me go and hide in the field until the third evening from now.

Isaiah 1: 14I hate your New Moons

and your appointed feasts.

They have become a burden to Me;

I am weary of bearing them.

“We can come to the same place today, where God is tired of us going to church.” (Guzik)

I believe church is a matter of the heart ❤️ and if your heart ♥️ isn’t in it and we are just going through the motions, how do you think HE feels about it? Would HE love it or hate it?

10This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

“Every Sabbath day, an additional lamb was sacrificed every morning and every evening.” (Guzik)

Numbers 28:1-8 Commanded and Convicted at its appointed time!

1Then the LORD said to Moses, 2“Command the Israelites and say to them: See that you present to Me at its appointed time the food for My offerings by fire, as a pleasing aroma to Me.

3And tell them that this is the offering made by fire you are to present to the LORD as a regular burnt offering each day: two unblemished year-old male lambs. 4Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight, 5along with a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with a quarter hin of oil from pressed olives.

6This is a regular burnt offering established at Mount Sinai as a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD. 7The drink offering accompanying each lamb shall be a quarter hin. Pour out the offering of fermented drink to the LORD in the sanctuary area. 8And offer the second lamb at twilight, with the same grain offering and drink offering as in the morning. It is an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

“Israel was commanded to bring a male lamb to the LORD every morning and every evening. Each day began and ended with this statement of the need for atonement by sacrifice and expression of devotion to the LORD.” (Guzik)

“This reminds us that it is appropriate to begin and end our day with a statement of trust in God’s atonement and expression of our devotion to Him.” (Guzik)

Commanded and Convicted at its appointed time!

MORNING

Psalm 5: 3In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice;

at daybreak I lay my plea before You

and wait in expectation.

Psalm 88: 13But to You, O LORD, I cry for help;

in the morning my prayer comes before You.

EVENING

Psalm 63: 6When I remember You on my bed,

I think of You through the watches of the night.

Psalm 141: 2May my prayer be set before You like incense,

my uplifted hands like the evening offering.

ALL THE TIME

Psalm 55: 17Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress,

and He hears my voice.

During my morning devotional these verses “commanded and convicted” me that I’m not praying enough at its appointed time. I need to devote more time in prayer to our Lord Jesus!

How are you doing in this area of prayer?

Numbers 27:18-23 Joshua Commissioned

18And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man with the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, and commission him in their sight. 20Confer on him some of your authority, so that the whole congregation of Israel will obey him. 21He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him before the LORD by the judgment of the Urim. At his command, he and all the Israelites with him—the entire congregation—will go out and come in.”

22Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23and laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD had instructed through Moses.

Joshua was a faithful servant, “a man with the Spirit in him and lay your hands on him”.

It was important for the people to see Joshua commissioned in their sight.

Joshua the faithful servant becomes the leader of the Israelites.

Numbers 27:15-17 Sheep without a Shepherd

15So Moses appealed to the LORD, 16“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

Sheep without a Shepherd

Moses was in a sense was being Christlike, he wasn’t concerned for himself, he was concerned for the people!

Look was Jesus says in Mark 6: 34When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.

Are you a sheep without a shepherd? One of the important facets of Christianity is to belong…. belong to a congregation and to have a shepherd, a pastor. Without the community of the congregation you are alone and wolves 🐺 love a lone sheep!

Numbers 27:12-14 Gathered to your People

12Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of the Abarim rangea and see the land that I have given the Israelites. 13After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was; 14for when the congregation contended in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against My command to show My holiness in their sight regarding the waters.” Those were the waters of Meribahb in Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin.

Gathered to your People

“Moses was first told he would die before coming to the Promised Land in Numbers 20. It was still many months until Moses would climb to the top of the mountain, able to see the Promised Land but not able enter it and die there (Deuteronomy 34). Yet God told him of it here, so as to prepare his heart for the right time.” (Guzik)

Moses was blessed to know that he would soon die, “gathered to your people”.

It gave him time to prepare his heart and to set his affairs in order.

What would you do if you knew you had only months to live before you were gathered to your people?

Hopefully the first thing on your bucket list would be to make sure you were right with Jesus!

Numbers 27:6-11 Allowing Daughters to Inherit

6and the LORD answered him, 7“The daughters of Zelophehad speak correctly. You certainly must give them property as an inheritance among their father’s brothers, and transfer their father’s inheritance to them.

8Furthermore, you shall say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, you are to transfer his inheritance to his daughter. 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11And if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the next of kin from his clan, that he may take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites, as the LORD has commanded Moses.’ ”

“Allowing daughters to inherit, where there were no sons in the family, created another problem though. When they married, they would take the family land with them, thus destroying the father’s estate. To deal with this, chapter 36 brings in additional rules governing the marriage of heiresses.” (Wenham)

How many families are destroyed over inheritance?

This can be a touchy subject for some, the Christian method would be equal shares between siblings. Don’t fight, don’t argue, don’t demand and if things get out of hand lift it up to the Lord. Let the Lord handle it even if it means you don’t receive any inheritance.

He is God and He is the Judge.
