Judges 18:7-10 Danger of Carnal Security!

”So the five men departed and went to Laish. They saw the people who were there, how they dwelt safely, in the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure. There were no rulers in the land who might put them to shame for anything. They were far from the Sidonians, and they had no ties with anyone.“

‭‭Judges‬ ‭18‬:‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

The Danites found a city nearby that was not occupied by Israelites, but by a colony of the Sidonians. This was a group that God told Israel to drive out of the land of Canaan (Joshua 13:4).

i. In his sermon titled The Danger of Carnal Security, Charles Spurgeon used the description of the Sidonians in Judges 18:7, 27-28 as a description of the false security of the carnal believer. They are, like the Sidonians:

· Free from all internal struggles or conflicts.

· Free from rulers such as the governor of conscience.

· Free from ties and concerns to other people.

· Free from the fear of invasion.” (Guzik)

”Then the spies came back to their brethren at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren said to them, “What is your report?”“

‭‭Judges‬ ‭18‬:‭8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

”So they said, “Arise, let us go up against them. For we have seen the land, and indeed it is very good. Would you do nothing? Do not hesitate to go, and enter to possess the land.“

‭‭Judges‬ ‭18‬:‭9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Seeing that the land was good, and the city was not heavily defended, the Danites believed this would be a good city to conquer and take as their own territory.” (Guzik)

”When you go, you will come to a secure people and a large land. For God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth.”“

‭‭Judges‬ ‭18‬:‭10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Danger of Carnal Security

Do you know someone that has this disease of carnal security without a governor of conscience? It’s our job as Christians to warn them of their spiritual doom and death!

Here is a good biblical description of the conscience:

“The New Testament concept of conscience is more individual in nature and involves three major truths.

First, conscience is a God-given capacity for human beings to exercise self-evaluation.

Second, the New Testament portrays the conscience as a witness to something. Third, the conscience is a servant of the individual’s value system.”

1 Timothy 4:1-2 (ESV)

1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,

As though it had been cauterized with a hot iron!

“Such a conscience is hardened and calloused, no longer feeling anything. A person with a seared conscience no longer listens to its promptings, and he can sin with abandon, delude himself into thinking all is well with his soul, and treat others insensitively and without compassion.” (Gotquestions.org)

Without a governor of conscience!

I believe I’ve always have had a conscience, but I can also say I’ve sinned because I didn’t always listen to it!

If we fail to repeatedly listen to our conscience it can become seared and we are in danger of carnal security!

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
