Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Teach them Diligently!

6These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts. 7And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.

When we adopted our son we taught him to pray, read him a Bible that was on his level, put him in Sunday school, we prayed at each meal and before he went to bed. One of my favorite memories is with him sitting in my lap while reading him a children’s Bible. Another was when we were eating lunch at a burger restaurant and he saw a homeless person walking down the street and asked if we could buy him lunch. We did but the man wouldn’t accept it. I told him not to worry that we would find someone else. We did and it was a woman sitting on a curb that someone had beaten up badly. We let my wife handle the situation. The interesting part was how the Lord used my sons heart ❤️ to send us to a woman that needed help.

Our house has a sign on it, from Joshua 24:15…..”As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”

Have you diligently taught your children about the Lord?

Deuteronomy 6:1-3 Warning and a Blessing

1These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess, 2so that you and your children and grandchildren may fear the LORD your God all the days of your lives by keeping all His statutes and commandments that I give you, and so that your days may be prolonged. 3Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.

“The Hebrew is emphatic here. Moses called attention to The Commandment. In the following verses, God reduced the law to one ruling principle - one commandment that encompassed all the commandments.” (Guzik)

“be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper” Notice the warning!

“multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey” Notice the blessing!

Likewise we received a warning and a blessing!

2 Timothy 2: 11This is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with Him,

we will also live with Him;

12if we endure,

we will also reign with Him;

if we deny Him,

He will also deny us;

13if we are faithless,

He remains faithful,

for He cannot deny Himself.

Have you died with Him?

Deuteronomy 5:32-33 Don’t Turn Aside!

32So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or to the left. 33You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

Don’t Turn Aside!

“When we have trouble obeying God, we are clearly lacking in one or both of these areas. Either we forget His glory, or we forget His love for us, or we forget both of them.” (Guzik)

Notice this and dwell on it, “you are not to turn aside to the right or to the left”.

Because we have a sinful nature this piece of scripture is impossible to keep!

When we turn aside we need to repent and return to the Lord.

Joel 2: 12“Yet even now,”

declares the LORD,

“return to Me with all your heart,

with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”

He’s waiting for you to return!

Deuteronomy 5:28-31 Attitude of Heart

28And the LORD heard the words you spoke to me, and He said to me, “I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. 29If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commandments always, so that it might be well with them and with their children forever. 30Go and tell them: ‘Return to your tents.’ 31But you stand here with Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and statutes and ordinances you are to teach them to follow in the land that I am giving them to possess.”

Attitude of Heart

The Lord was pleased in all they have spoken!

“The feeling is that God liked what He saw in Israel, but “hoped” (to use a figure of speech, because God doesn’t “hope” for things the way we do) that they would keep the same attitude of heart. In fact, Israel did not keep this heart; not 40 days later they danced in worship around a golden calf.” (Guzik)

Christian, we are no different than the Israelites! We attend church and worship the Lord but Monday comes and most of us return to our old habits!

Do your coworkers, neighbors or friends believe Jesus is in your heart ❤️ ?

Deuteronomy 5:23-27 Stay Away!

23And when you heard the voice out of the darkness while the mountain was blazing with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your elders approached me, 24and you said, “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the fire. Today we have seen that a man can live even if God speaks with him. 25But now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us, and we will die, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer. 26For who of all flesh has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the fire, as we have, and survived? 27Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says. Then you can tell us everything the LORD our God tells you; we will listen and obey.”

Stay Away

“The Mount Sinai experience was not one of sweet fellowship with God. The message of Mount Sinai was not “come unto Me,” but “stay away, for I am holy, and you are not.”

“This is exactly the message of the writer to the Hebrews in Hebrews 12:18-24: We, under the New Covenant, have not come to Mount Sinai and the message “stay away”; we have come to Mount Zion, where God’s message is “come unto Me.” (Guzik)

Stay away is the message most people say to God and when you share the Good News and explain that the Lord wants them to “come unto Me” they shout stay away!

Unfortunately when they die the Lord will shout, stay away but to His followers He will say, come unto Me!

Are you a stay away or come unto Me person?

Deuteronomy 5:22 The Lord Spoke

22The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice to your whole assembly out of the fire, the cloud, and the deep darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

The Lord Spoke

“The whole scene was indeed awesome: The LORD spoke; there was fire, a cloudthick darkness, a loud voice; and it all made such an impression on Israel that they asked Moses to not have God speak to them so directly any more.” (Guzik)

Has the Lord spoke to you? I remember one time I was standing face to face with evil and He spoke to me and said do not confront this man, turn now and go inside this store. I turned and quickly went through the door. As the door closed the man reared up a kicked the door causing a scene and ran off.

There are times the Lord leaves such an impression that it shakes us to our core and other times we need to remove ourselves from the noise around us to hear His small still voice. Either way we need to pay attention and listen to Him.

Deuteronomy 5:21 Covet

21You shall not covetj your neighbor’s wife. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house or field, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Covet

Nathan Rebukes David with this story of coveting.

2 Samuel 12: 1Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived, he said, “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor. 2The rich man had a great number of sheep and cattle, 3but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food and drank from his cup; it slept in his arms and was like a daughter to him.

4Now a traveler came to the rich man, who refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for his guest.”

But why did the Lord send Nathan to king David? Because he coveted his neighbors wife, got her pregnant and when his plan failed to have her husband sleep with her to cover up the pregnancy, David devised a plan to have her husband killed in battle.

Now David repented of his sins and the Lord forgave him but there were consequences!

“Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay. –”
