The Covenant of Circumcision
9God also said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep My covenant, you and your descendants for the generations to come. 10This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you, which you are to keep: Every male among you must be circumcised. 11You are to circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and this will be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
12Generation after generation, every male must be circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased from a foreigner—even those who are not your offspring. 13Whether they are born in your household or purchased, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant.
14But if any male is not circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
“Circumcision indicated to the seed of Abraham that there was a defilement of the flesh in man which must for ever be taken away, or man would remain impure, and out of covenant with God.” (Spurgeon)
There are also hygienic reasons for circumcision, studies have shown Jewish women have low rates of cervical cancer mostly because their husbands were circumcised.
Why circumcise on the eighth day? There is actually a medical discovery that found a newborn infants blood clotting agents, vitamin K and prothrombin are at optimum levels on the eighth day. God designed and created us, so He knows best. Remember the television series, Father knows best? Yes He does!
Circumcision didn’t save a Jewish man, but refusal to circumcision meant disobedience to the covenant.
