Joshua 22:7-8 Rewards

7(To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given land in Bashan, and to the other half Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan among their brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them, 8saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth, with immense herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide with your brothers the spoil of your enemies.”

“Their obedience to God and faithfulness to their brethren has been rewarded. God has allowed them to gain much plunder that they can take back home with them.” (Guzik)

Let this be a reminder to us, what we have was given to us by the Lord. It’s all His!

I’m reminded by this verse:

Job 1:21 (ESV) 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

The Lord doesn’t always reward us with earthly things as some televangelists claim, but we will be storing up our heavenly rewards.

Matthew 6: 19Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rustc destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Are you storing up treasures in heaven?

Joshua 22:6 The Lord Bless You

6So Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way, and they went to their homes.

“Perhaps he used the blessing from Numbers 6:23-27Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.’” So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.” (Guzik)

I love this blessing, Pastor Robert of Calvary Tucson uses it often.

Blessings to you!

Joshua 22:5 Love

5But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

“We should not miss the order here. First, we should take care to hear God. Then we give Him our love. Next comes a walk of obedience. To mix this order up is to drift into heresy (loving without hearing) or legalism (obeying before loving).” (Guzik)

Love ðŸ’•

Mark 12: 29Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

This commandment is hard especially for a man because our sin nature wants to fight when we’ve been wronged! And then our heart wants to become bitter towards the person that wronged us.

So if Jesus tells us to love ðŸ’• our neighbor as yourself, how do we overcome the bitterness in our heart?

It seems no matter where we move to, we have one or two neighbors that are in everybody’s business and telling us what we can and cannot do with our property. One such neighbor was a bully and went off in a huff. As a Christian, we are given a commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. ðŸ¤”

So we simply pray for them and pray for ourselves every time we feel the bitterness in our heart for them. The Lord will do the rest!

Have you ever held a grudge towards someone?

Joshua 22:1-4 Little by Little

1Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh 2and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you. 3All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.

4And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.

“In the seven years they had been with Joshua, helping the tribes west of the Jordan to conquer their enemies, they had been completely obedient and helpful to Joshua.” (Guzik)

Little by Little

Seven years fighting battles away from their families! I am reminded of this verses:

Deuteronomy 7:22 AMP The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for [if you did] the wild animals would become too numerous for you.

We are no different! We can only except change, little by little! When we first come to Jesus we are like babe’s drinking milk, studying the Bible and as we mature the Holy Spirit reveals more understanding, little by little until we are able to enjoy solid food.

Change is hard! It goes against our sinful nature to be Christ like but little by little we slowly become more like Jesus so that others see a change and a door is opened when they say, you have changed, you’re different….. then you can tell them about Jesus!

Joshua 21:43-45 Is It Not True?

43Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it. 44And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.

45Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.

“This is the point where Israel stopped commemorating the Passover as if equipped to travel as described in Exodus 12:11). Now they will eat the Passover reclining at rest (as described in John 13:23), because the LORD had given them rest in the land.”

“God has been completely faithful to you and made provision for continual victory. He has given you great things, but what do you possess?” (Guzik)

“In the light of the Cross, is it not true that the enemy has no right to dwell in the land? Is it not true that Satan’s claim to your life was taken from him at Calvary? Is it not true that sin has no right to a foothold in the life of the child of God? Is it not true that Satan has no power in the presence of Omnipotence? Is it not true that by virtue of His blood and His resurrection, Jesus Christ is pledged to destroy the enemy utterly? Is it not true that in the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit there is strength for every temptation, grace for every trial, power to overcome every difficulty?” (Alan Redpath)

Is it not true that you have a free choice to follow Jesus Christ as your Lord and King?

Joshua 21:4-42 Sufficiency!

4The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.

5The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

6The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

7And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

8So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, they designated these cities by name 10to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them:

11They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.) 12But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.

13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah, 14Jattir, Eshtemoa, 15Holon, Debir, 16Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.

17And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba, 18Anathoth, and Almon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

19In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.

20The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities:

From the tribe of Ephraim 21they were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Gezer, 22Kibzaim, and Beth-horon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

23From the tribe of Dan they were given Elteke, Gibbethon, 24Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

25And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Taanach and Gath-rimmon—two cities, together with their pasturelands.

26In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.

27This is what the Levite clans of the Gershonites were given:

From the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, together with their pasturelands.

28From the tribe of Issachar they were given Kishion, Daberath, 29Jarmuth, and En-gannim—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

30From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal, Abdon, 31Helkath, and Rehob—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

32And from the tribe of Naphtali they were given Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Hammoth-dor, and Kartan—three cities, together with their pasturelands.

33In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the Gershonite clans.

34This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given:

From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Jokneam, Kartah, 35Dimnah, and Nahalal—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

36From the tribe of Reuben they were given Bezer, Jahaz, 37Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four cities, together with their pasturelands.

38And from the tribe of Gad they were given Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim, 39Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all, together with their pasturelands.

40In all, twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari, the remaining Levite clans.

41For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites. 42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.

A lot of cities and a lot to take in! What sticks out to me is this: “together with their pasturelands”. Today our cities have no surrounding pasturelands that support the citizens. ie no self sufficiency.

But the Israelites had sufficiency in the Lord!

But as Christians we have sufficiency in Christ!

2 Corinthians 12: 9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Does His power rest on you?

Joshua 21:1-3 Inheritance!

1Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel 2at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our livestock.”

3So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

“The Levites received no “province” of land such as the other tribes did; however, they had to live somewhere. So, each tribe gave certain cities and common-lands (land immediately surrounding the cities) to the tribe of Levi.” (Guzik)

Jos 13:14 NKJV - 14 Only to the tribe of Levi he had given no inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire [are] their inheritance, as He said to them.

God had declared that He would be their inheritance!

Jesus is our inheritance!

Ephesians 1:11 (ESV) 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

Is He yours?

Joshua 20:9 Our City of Refuge

9These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.

Our City of Refuge

Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.

Hebrews 6: 18Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged.

“Both Jesus and the cities of refuge provide protection only within their boundaries; to go outside means death.

·With both Jesus and the cities of refuge, full freedom comes with the death of the High Priest.

· The cities of refuge only helped the innocent, but the guilty can come to Jesus and find refuge.” (Guzik)

In Deuteronomy the Lord tells the Israelites and us that vengeance is His, but in Joshua He sets up cities of refuge because of avengers of blood ðŸ©¸

This almost seems contradictory but it reveals our loving Lord because He knows our heart condition in a sinful world.

Deuteronomy 32: 35Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.i

In due time their foot will slip;

for their day of disaster is near,

and their doom is coming quickly.”

Have you ever murdered someone in your heart? I’m guilty!

Joshua 20:7-8 Set Apart

7So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

8And beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho, they designated Bezer on the wilderness plateau from the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan from the tribe of Manasseh.

Set Apart

“On a map, we see that the cities of refuge were well spaced throughout the country. No matter where you were in Israel, you were not very far from a city of refuge.”

Deuteronomy 19:2-3 tells us that proper roads were to be built and maintained to these cities of refuge. The city was not much good to the slayer if he could not get to it quickly.” (Guzik)

As a Christian you were set apart by God because of your love for His Son!

Romans 8: 28We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him,+ those whom he has called according to his purpose. 29Those whom God had already chosen he also set apart to become like his Son, so that the Son would be the first among many believers. 30And so those whom God set apart, he called; and those he called, he put right with himself, and he shared his glory with them. GNT

Last night we streamed Calvary Tucson and during worship music a mother and daughter were singing. Because we can see, we could tell that the young lady was blind, possibly from birth. But what a voice! No matter what our human frailty the Lord sets us apart for good works for those who love His Son!

Do you love ❤️ His Son?

Joshua 20:5-6 Judgement

5Now if the avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the manslayer into his hand, because that man killed his neighbor accidentally without prior malice. 6He is to stay in that city until he stands trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest serving at that time. Then the manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”

Judgement

“Israel had a sophisticated legal system, with judgments often based on intent and premeditation.”

“After being declared innocent of murder by the proper authorities, and after the death of the standing high priest, the slayer could go back to his home and be protected against the wrath of the avenger of blood.” (Guzik)

Just as the manslayer stood in judgment before the assembly, we will stand before the judgement seat of God for our transgressions.

For it has been written:

Romans 14: 10But why do you judge your brother, or why also do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11For it has been written:

“I live, says the Lord,

that every knee will bow to Me,

and every tongue will confess to God.”

12So then, each of us will give account concerning himself to God.

Will you be declared innocent because of the blood ðŸ©¸ of Jesus Christ?

Joshua 20:4 Our Refuge!

4When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.

“According to custom, the elders of the city spent much time at the gates of the city. When someone fleeing from an avenger of blood came to a city of refuge, he stated his case to the elders at the city gates.”

“After explaining the case, the fleeing person could expect to find protection within the walls of the city of refuge, though he would have to stay there, and live in the city, to enjoy that protection.” (Guzik)

David took refuge in God.

Psalm 62:7–8 (ESV) 7  On God rests my salvation and my glory;

my mighty rock, my refuge is God. 8  Trust in him at all times, O people;

pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

We have refuge in our King Jesus!

John 16:33 (ESV) 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Hebrews 13:5–6 (ESV) 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Jesus will state, explain our case, 1 John 2: 1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

If you don’t have Jesus, where will you flee to?

Joshua 20:1-3 Cities of Refuge

1Then the LORD said to Joshua, 2“Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses, 3so that anyone who kills another unintentionally or accidentally may flee there. These will be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

“The purpose of the cities of refuge was to protect the slayer who kills any person accidentally or unintentionally. They were to protect someone in the case of manslaughter as opposed to murder.” (Guzik)

“God had a passion to make sure that murderers were punished in ancient Israel, and in that culture, the final responsibility for justice rested with the designated goel (avenger of blood) in the family.” (Guzik)

Rom 13:3-4 NKJV - 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to [execute] wrath on him who practices evil.

Num 35:31 NKJV - 31 'Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who [is] guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.

Num 35:33-34 NKJV - 33 'So you shall not pollute the land where you [are]; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it. 34 'Therefore do not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.' "

Our land is polluted, “for blood defiles the land”. Our state is considering passing legislation that a minor under 18 years old cannot receive a life sentence for the crime of murder.

In 1984 a friend’s 8 year old daughter was kidnapped and murdered. They caught the man responsible who was convicted and sentenced to death. Through never ending appeals which were filed, some on the daughter’s birthday the execution was delayed for years but finally carried out last June of 2022!

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray for a revival, I pray for justice for those who are victims of violent crimes. I lift up our polluted land and ask that You cleanse it.

In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.

Joshua 19:40-51 Remarkable Humility

 Joshua’s Inheritance

49When they had finished distributing the land into its territories, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, 50as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serahd in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it.

51These are the inheritances that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.

“Joshua received what was promised to him by God, but in remarkable humility, he receives his portion last. This is the kind of humble service and concern for others that makes Joshua such a wonderful picture of Jesus Christ.” (Guzik)

I’m reminded by this verse:

Matthew 20:16 So those who are last [in this world] shall be first [in the world to come], and those who are first, last.”

What would our world be like if everyone showed remarkable humility?
