Exodus 27:9-19 The Courtyard!

9You are also to make a courtyard for the tabernacle. On the south side of the courtyard make curtains of finely spun linen, a hundred cubits longb on one side, 10with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and silver hooks and bands on the posts.

11Likewise there are to be curtains on the north side, a hundred cubits long, with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and with silver hooks and bands on the posts. 12The curtains on the west side of the courtyard shall be fifty cubits wide,c with ten posts and ten bases.

13The east side of the courtyard, toward the sunrise, is to be fifty cubits wide. 14Make the curtains on one side fifteen cubits long,d with three posts and three bases, 15and the curtains on the other side fifteen cubits long, with three posts and three bases.

16The gate of the courtyard shall be twenty cubits long, with a curtain embroidered with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely spun linen. It shall have four posts and four bases.

17All the posts around the courtyard shall have silver bands, silver hooks, and bronze bases. 18The entire courtyard shall be a hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide, with curtains of finely spun linen five cubits high,g and with bronze bases. 19All the utensils of the tabernacle for every use, including all its tent pegs and the tent pegs of the courtyard, shall be made of bronze.

“As the Tent itself took up only about one-fifteenth [about 7%] of the area of the courtyard, there was plenty of room.” (Cole)

“Its purposes were fourfold: (1) it was a barrier in that it prevented unlawful approach; (2) it was a protection, keeping out all wild animals; (3) it was a positive line of demarcation between the world and the holy presence of God; and (4) with its single gate, it was a way of approach to God.” (Kaiser)

The gate to the courtyard is estimated to be thirty feet wide!

Can you imagine the process of dismantling and reassembling the tabernacle and courtyard every time the Israelites moved through the wilderness?

Five years ago when I moved across country after living in the same house for twenty nine years I almost killed myself packing boxes and a moving truck in the heat of summer! I couldn’t have accomplished the task without my brother!

Exodus 27:3-8 Sin has a high price!

3Make all its utensils of bronze—its pots for removing ashes, its shovels, its sprinkling bowls, its meat forks, and its firepans. 4Construct for it a grate of bronze mesh, and make a bronze ring at each of the four corners of the mesh. 5Set the grate beneath the ledge of the altar, so that the mesh comes halfway up the altar. 

6Additionally, make poles of acacia wood for the altar and overlay them with bronze. 7The poles are to be inserted into the rings so that the poles are on two sides of the altar when it is carried.

8Construct the altar with boards so that it is hollow. It is to be made just as you were shown on the mountain.

Pans: “To hold the fat-soaked ashes when they were removed from the hearth by the shovels.” (Kaiser)

Basins: “To catch the blood of the animals slain beside the altar to be sprinkled on the altar’s base.” (Kaiser)

Forks: “Three-pronged forks for arranging the sacrifice or retracting the priest’s portion” (Kaiser)

Firepans: “For carrying fire from the altar of incense inside the Holy Place” (Kaiser)

Sin has a high price. I’ve always wondered, why blood 🩸 to cover sin?

Genesis 3:21 And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

Adam named all the animals and before sin they were his pets. After sin the Lord made garments of skin for Adam and Eve.

Blood was spilled because of sin and it takes blood to cover sin.

Jesus Christ washes away sin with His blood.

Is your sin covered by blood 🩸 or washed away?

Exodus 27:1-2 Cost of Sin?

1“You are to build an altar of acacia wood. The altar must be square, five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high.a 2Make a horn on each of its four corners, so that the horns are of one piece, and overlay it with bronze.

“This was the only altar of sacrifice in Israel’s sanctuary in early days: blood would be smeared on its ‘horns’ in ceremonial atonement, and on it ‘holocausts’ or ‘whole burnt offerings’ would be laid. Libations were poured at its side, and blood dashed over it.” (Cole)

Cost of sin! This alter was for the slaying of the animal sacrifices and the pouring out and sprinkling of blood.

Cost of sin, Jesus Christ on the cross!

What is the difference between the two? One covers sin and the other removes it.

Exodus 26:36-37 The Entrance!

36For the entrance to the tent, you are to make a curtain embroidered with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely spun linen. 37Make five posts of acacia wood for the curtain, overlay them with gold hooks, and cast five bronze bases for them.”

This was the only entrance to the tent (tabernacle).

“Since bronze (or brass) must be made with a refining fire, it pictures purity and endurance through trial. The entrance to the tabernacle hung on a symbolic foundation of what Jesus did for us.” (Guzik)

Exodus 26:31-35 Veil of the Temple!

31Make a veil of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and finely spun linen, with cherubim skillfully worked into it. 32Hang it with gold hooks on four posts of acacia wood, overlaid with gold and standing on four silver bases. 33And hang the veil from the clasps and place the ark of the Testimony behind the veil. So the veil will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.g

34Put the mercy seat on the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy Place. 35And place the table outside the veil on the north side of the tabernacle, and put the lampstand opposite the table, on the south side.

The ancient Jews said the veil was up to four fingers thick so no one could possibly see through it and it’s estimated it was sixty feet tall!

It separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place and only the High Priest could enter once a year. 

Zechariah was told in the Most Holy Place that he and Elizabeth would have a son.

Luke 1: 8One day while Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10And at the hour of the incense offering, the whole congregation was praying outside.

11Just then, an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of the incense. 12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and gripped with fear.

13But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. 14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.

This is the same veil was was torn in two when Jesus died on the cross.

Matthew 27: 50When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He yielded up His spirit. 51At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.

What was the significance of the temple veil being torn in two when Jesus died?

Tearing of the veil signifies that YOU now have access to God through Jesus Christ.

Exodus 26:15-30 Pointing Toward Jesus!

15You are to construct upright frames of acacia wood for the tabernacle. 16Each frame is to be ten cubits long and a cubit and a half wide.e 17Two tenonsf must be connected to each other for each frame. Make all the frames of the tabernacle in this way.

18Construct twenty frames for the south side of the tabernacle, 19with forty silver bases under the twenty frames—two bases for each frame, one under each tenon.

20For the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, make twenty frames 21and forty silver bases—two bases under each frame.

22Make six frames for the rear of the tabernacle, the west side, 23and two frames for the two back corners of the tabernacle, 24coupled together from bottom to top and fitted into a single ring. These will serve as the two corners. 25So there are to be eight frames and sixteen silver bases—two under each frame.

26You are to also make five crossbars of acacia wood for the frames on one side of the tabernacle, 27five for those on the other side, and five for those on the rear side of the tabernacle, to the west.

28The central crossbar in the middle of the frames shall extend from one end to the other. 29Overlay the frames with gold and make gold rings to hold the crossbars. Also overlay the crossbars with gold.

30So you are to set up the tabernacle according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

Was it a solid wall or framing for the fabric coverings? We don’t know for sure.

The silver is interesting because Jesus was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. 

Have you ever performed framing for a building? Today we use nails to join the framework but in these verses they used tenon’s. Two pieces of wood could be overlapped and a tenon inserted into a hole joining the two pieces of wood.

I believe the framing was pointing towards the cross that Jesus was hung on. The two pieces of wood would have to have been joined with a tenon.

In the tabernacle we have silver and wood, two of the same materials tied to the betrayal and crucifixion of our Lord!

Exodus 26:7-14 Like Heaven!

 7You are to make curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle—eleven curtains in all. 8Each of the eleven curtains is to be the same size—thirty cubits long and four cubits wide.b

9Join five of the curtains into one set and the other six into another. Then fold the sixth curtain over double at the front of the tent.

10Make fifty loops along the edge of the end curtain in the first set, and fifty loops along the edge of the corresponding curtain in the second set. 11Make fifty bronze clasps and put them through the loops to join the tent together as a unit.

12As for the overlap that remains of the tent curtains, the half curtain that is left over shall hang down over the back of the tabernacle. 13And the tent curtains will be a cubitc longer on either side, and the excess will hang over the sides of the tabernacle to cover it.

14Also make a covering for the tent out of ram skins dyed red, and over that a covering of fine leather.

“Came from long-haired goats and most likely was black in color. It was a coarse material that often was used to weave tents. Felt would be a modern equivalent.” (Kaiser)

“Skins that had all the wool removed and then were dyed red; it was like our morocco leather.” (Kaiser)

The inside of the Tabernacle was like heaven!

And was obscured from all except those who entered through the doorway, curtains.

In the same way heaven will be obscured from all those who reject Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They will be on the outside, knocking, Lord let us in!

Matthew 7:23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’

Will you see the inside of heaven?

Exodus 26:1-6 From the Inside Out!

1“You are to construct the tabernacle itself with ten curtains of finely spun linen, each with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and cherubim skillfully worked into them. 2Each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits widea —all curtains the same size.

3Five of the curtains are to be joined together, and the other five joined as well. 4Make loops of blue material on the edge of the end curtain in the first set, and do the same for the end curtain in the second set.

5Make fifty loops on one curtain and fifty loops on the end curtain of the second set, so that the loops line up opposite one another. 6Make fifty gold clasps as well, and join the curtains together with the clasps, so that the tabernacle will be a unit.

“Golden-winged images, made by God’s special appointment, and set out of sight. Hence then is no warrant for the use of images in churches.” (Trapp)

“The designs on this covering were visible only from the inside of the tabernacle. Therefore, on the inside of the tabernacle, one saw cherubim all around - as one would see in heaven”. (Guzik)

God was constructing the tabernacle from the inside out.

He does the same with us, first He changes our heart and then He turns our light on for others to see. He makes us His light of the world.

Matthew 5: 14You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Exodus 25:31-40 His Light!

31Then you are to make a lampstand of pure, hammered gold. It shall be made of one piece, including its base and shaft, its cups, and its buds and petals.

32Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand—three on one side and three on the other. 33There are to be three cups shaped like almond blossoms on the first branch, each with buds and petals, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches that extend from the lampstand.

34And on the lampstand there shall be four cups shaped like almond blossoms with buds and petals. 35For the six branches that extend from the lampstand, a bud must be under the first pair of branches, a bud under the second pair, and a bud under the third pair. 36The buds and branches are to be all of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.

37Make seven lamps and set them up on the lampstand so that they illuminate the area in front of it. 38The wick trimmers and their trays must be of pure gold. 39The lampstand and all these utensils shall be made from a talent of pure gold.g

40See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.h ”

“A glance at any reproduction of the Arch of Titus will make the main outline plain, although the exact metaphorical sense of some of the technical terms used is not quite clear.” (Cole)

Revelation 4: 5From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings, and peals of thunder. Before the throne burned seven torches of fire. These are the seven Spirits of God.

The seven lamps represent the Holy Spirit in heaven.

In modern times when we need light we flick a switch and with electricity a light shines. But what do we do without electricity and we need light? Recently during a power outage I pulled out our trusty battery lamp. It died and would no longer work. So I used a candle and on the next trip to town I bought some kerosene for our old kerosene lamp.

In heaven God shines brightly but on earth we rely on the sun, the moon or some type of artificial light.

Are you His light to a dying world?

Exodus 25:23-30 Constant Communion With God!

23You are also to make a table of acacia wood two cubits long, a cubit wide, and a cubit and a half high.e 24Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. 25And make a rim around it a handbreadth wideand put a gold molding on the rim.

26Make four gold rings for the table and fasten them to the four corners at its four legs. 27The rings are to be close to the rim, to serve as holders for the poles used to carry the table. 28Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold, so that the table may be carried with them.

29You are also to make the plates and dishes, as well as the pitchers and bowls for pouring drink offerings. Make them out of pure gold.

30And place the Bread of the Presence on the table before Me at all times.

“We are fortunate in having, on the Arch of Titus, a carved representation of this table (as well as of the golden lampstand). The model pictured is that from Herod’s Temple but, to judge from the description in Exodus, it followed closely the Exodus pattern.” (Cole)

“In the East a table was always the symbol of fellowship. Thus the people were reminded of the possibility created of constant communion with God.” (Morgan)

Exodus 25:17-22 Place of Atonement!

17And you are to construct a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide.d 18Make two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends of the mercy seat, 19one cherub on one end and one on the other, all made from one piece of gold. 20And the cherubim are to have wings that spread upward, overshadowing the mercy seat. The cherubim are to face one another, looking toward the mercy seat. 21Set the mercy seat atop the ark, and put the Testimony that I will give you into the ark.

22And I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the Testimony; I will speak with you about all that I command you regarding the Israelites.

“In Israel, cherubim symbolized God’s attendant and messenger spirits (Psalm 104:3,4) and so were not considered a breach of Exodus 20:4, since no man worshipped them.” (Cole)

“The ark was the place of atonement or propitiation, hence the place where God was rendered favorable to his people.” (Kaiser)

Romans 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith in His blood, for a showing forth of His righteousness, because of the forbearance of the sins having taken place beforehand,

Where is your place of atonement?

The cross is a place of atonement or propitiation, Jesus Christ will meet you there.

Exodus 25:10-15 The Symbol of the Approach to God!

10And they are to construct an ark of acacia wood, two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high.b 11Overlay it with pure gold both inside and out, and make a gold molding around it.

12Cast four gold rings for it and fasten them to its four feet, two rings on one side and two on the other. 13And make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 14Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, in order to carry it. 15The poles are to remain in the rings of the ark; they must not be removed. 16And place inside the ark the Testimony, which I will give you.

“The most important feature is described first of all, because it was the symbol of the approach to God.” (Thomas)

2 Samuel 6: 6When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon,e Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had stumbled. 7And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his irreverence, and he died there beside the ark of God.

Irreverence: a lack of respect. God sees our heart and knows everything about us. Since God struck Uzzah down it was because of his heart condition not because he was trying to keep the ark from falling!

I think it’s good that Jesus gave us the gift of salvation because each and every one of us show Him irreverence on a daily basis when we sin.

Jesus is now our means and the cross is the symbol of the approach to God.

Exodus 25:8-9 Architects Model!

8And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them. 9You must make the tabernacle and design all its furnishings according to the pattern I show you.

"The Hebrews were meant to feel that the God of their fathers was a fellow-pilgrim, that where they pitched He pitched, that their enemies, difficulties, and long toilsome marches were His." (Meyer)

Hebrews 8: 5The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

“The pattern means almost ‘architect’s model.’” (Cole)

Architects model, my parents had their retirement home designed by an architect. My father and I built it. The only problem I noticed was, why would an architect design a house for a retired couple with a sunken living room and kitchen? 

My fear was one of my parents would fall on the steps and break a hip. My fears were realized when years later my father broke his hip on those steps.

But look at Hebrews 8:5 “The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven”. Since God is perfect, the sanctuary, tabernacle and design was perfect!

I can’t wait to reside in heaven because it’s perfect!

Exodus 25:1-7 Whose heart ❤️ compels him!

1Then the LORD said to Moses, 2“Tell the Israelites to bring Me an offering. You are to receive My offering from every man whose heart compels him. 3This is the offering you are to accept from them: gold, silver, and bronze; 4blue, purple, and scarlet yarn; fine linen and goat hair; 5ram skins dyed red and fine leather;a acacia wood; 6olive oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; 7and onyx stones and gemstones to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece.

“All the materials for the building of the Tabernacle were to be supplied by the people themselves. This was not because God could not have provided everything in some other way.” (Morgan)

“This acacia is known to have been plentiful in Egypt, and it abounds in Arabia Desert, the very place in which Moses was when he built the tabernacle; and hence it is reasonable to suppose that he built it of that wood, which was every way proper for his purpose.” (Clarke)

Offering, this word means many different things to people. Our church passes a plate during service and asks for special offerings for events and projects. But in a sense to me, the elders aren’t trusting in the Lord.

What do I mean by that statement?

Our previous church decided not to pass the plate, they converted to agape boxes. The pastors sermon taught the church wasn’t trusting in the Lord for tithes and offerings (giving) and after the agape box conversion tithes increased! They never looked back and continue to trust in the Lord for tithes and offerings. “from every man whose heart compels him”.

In a sense, passing a plate allows people to “see” what you are giving. A agape box seems more private, between you and the Lord.

How does your heart compel you?

Exodus 24:15-18 Forty Days and Forty Nights!

15When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered it, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. 17And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop in the eyes of the Israelites.

18Moses entered the cloud as he went up on the mountain, and he remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

“The Hebrew verb is ‘dwelt’. It is used in a technical sense later of God’s ‘shekinah’, the outward manifestation of His presence to men.” (Cole)

“forty days and forty nights.”

Have you ever searched the Bible for these forty days and forty nights?

It’s interesting how many references there are along with the seventh day.

But these verses in the New Testament come to mind.

Matthew 4: 1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.

Mark 1: 12At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, 13and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.

Moses and Jesus did something in common, Moses remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights and Jesus remained in the desert forty days and forty nights.

Both were sustained by the word of God.

Exodus 24:12-14 Wretched Man!

12Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and stay here, so that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”

13So Moses set out with Joshua his attendant and went up on the mountain of God. 14And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are here with you. Whoever has a dispute can go to them.”

“Joshua accompanied Moses for a distance and there waited six days (a solemn reminder of God’s unapproachableness), when Moses was called higher to a personal and private interview with God, which lasted nearly six weeks (Deuteronomy 9:9).” (Thomas)

There are times I feel unworthy to do the devotional and times I’m just too busy with the new puppy “Joy”.

But the devotional helps me keep my focus on Jesus even though I’m a sinner and don’t always act like the Christian I proclaim to be because I am a wretched man!

But we will see in the chapters to come, the Israelites had the same issue, they are also wretched men!

I am reminded of what Paul has written in Romans!

Romans 7: 15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good. 17In that case, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do. 20And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21So this is the principle I have discovered: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God’s law. 23But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me. 24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Please pray for this wretched man!

Exodus 24:9-11 In Awe!

9Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, 10and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was a work like a pavement made of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself. 11But God did not lay His hand on the nobles of Israel; they saw Him, and they ate and drank.

“In this verse it is equally stressed that the elders did not dare to raise their eyes above His footstool.” (Cole)

“It is impossible to say what is meant by ‘they saw God.’ It was some appearance of the divine presence (Numbers 12:8; Isaiah 6:1; Ezekiel 1:26).” (Thomas)

Numbers 12: 8I speak with him face to face,

clearly and not in riddles;

he sees the form of the LORD

Isaiah 6: 1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted; and the train of His robe filled the temple. 

Ezekiel 1: 26Above the expanse over their heads was the likeness of a throne with the appearance of sapphire, and on the throne high above was a figure like that of a man.

It is clear they didn’t look above His footstool because that is the only description we received in these verses!

“and they ate and drank.” I suspect the elders weren’t at ease. I believe they were in awe!

Awe: an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like: in awe of God;

When we see the Lord for the first time, will we gaze into His eyes or will we be in awe, looking at the ground and His feet?

Exodus 24:4-8 A New Covenant!

4And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD.

Early the next morning he got up and built an altar at the base of the mountain, along with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel. 5Then he sent out some young men of Israel, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as peace offerings to the LORD.

6Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar. 7Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people, who replied, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”

8So Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

What stands out to me in these verses is all the blood and how it was sprinkled on the people. I believe it was a picture of Jesus Christ, what He went through with the cross giving us a New Covenant.

Matthew 26:28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.

The blood was a form of a signature, the signing of the covenant, a promise between God and the people and the people and God.

“Half of the blood being sprinkled on the ALTAR, and half of it sprinkled on the PEOPLE, showed that both GOD and THEY were mutually bound by this covenant.” (Clarke)
