Since we just finished reading about Christ's crucifixion, I thought we would go back some 900 years and look at some prophetic Psalms written about Him.
Psalm 22
For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Doe of the Dawn.”
1 My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me? Why are You so far away when I groan for help? 2 Every day I call to You, My God, but You do not answer. Every night You hear My voice, but I find no relief. 3 Yet You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 Our ancestors trusted in You, and You rescued them. 5 They cried out to You and were saved. They trusted in You and were never disgraced.
Eli Eli Lama Sabachthani? Some of Jesus's last words while hanging on the cross. Yes, God did "look away" from Jesus on the cross. Why would God do that? How did Jesus, in His greatest hour of need, know God had abandoned Him? His Father, His Abba....
Because the sin on all mankind was on Jesus. He was filthy with sin, contaminated, despicable.
God, being completely holy, totally pure, without fault, could not in His Greatness associate with sin. The sin placed on Jesus at the cross was more the the Father could bear. He HAD to look away, He couldn't be associated with that much sin in one place at one time.
Because God HAD to abandon Jesus for that instant, He does not HAVE to abandon us. Deuteronomy 31:6 tells us "So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
That's a promise of God and since God is completely Holy, totally pure, without fault, He could not lie to us. Jesus, with His infinite love for us, accepted God's abandonment for that instant so that we never would have to experience it. That knowledge make me love Him even more.
Blessings, Cecilia
