”So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. And they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away.“
II Samuel 5:20-21 NKJV
a. The LORD has broken through my enemies before me: At the battle of Baal Perazim, David defeated the Philistines with an overwhelming force, like a breakthrough of water.
b. They left their images there, and David and his men carried them away: The Philistines brought their idols to the battle, thinking they would help defeat the Israelites. Because David inquired of God and obeyed God, they carried away the Philistine idols. (Guzik)
Breakthrough of Water!
We lived in the Southwest for 29 years and one big lesson we learned was during the monsoons you had to be attentive to washes and low lying areas for the breakthrough of water! If you failed to do so you might be carried away, vehicle and all!
One such occasion we were sitting in the parking lot overlooking a wash waiting for the rain to subside and a breakthrough of water came rushing down carrying everything in its path with it! It was an amazing experience to witness the strength of it! Signs would warn drivers, DO NOT ENTER WHEN FLOODED!
I can only imagine the strength of the Lord with David’s army defeating the Philistines with overwhelming force, like a breakthrough of water!
Blessings
