”Then Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who had been invited, who were about thirty persons. And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Put it aside.’” So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. And Samuel said, “See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed, that you might eat with the guests.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.“ 1 Samuel 9:22-24 ESV
a. Had them sit in the place of honor: In that culture the seating arrangement at dinner had a special protocol. The seat of honor was always on a particular side next to the host. It was a great honor to be seated in this place next to the prophet Samuel.
b. It was set apart for you: Saul was also given the special portion. In that culture every meal had a special portion to be given to the one the host wanted to honor. Saul was especially honored at this meal.
i. We may speculate that Samuel was interested to see how Saul reacted when honored. This often shows what kind of person we really are. If we receive honor humbly, without regarding it too much or becoming proud about it, it says something good about us. If we show a false humility or a proud heart in the way we receive honor, it shows something bad in our character.
Honor
We had some friends who are now in their heavenly home and when they visited us for a meal I’d ask him if he would do us the honor and bless the meal. He always had a special way of saying grace. I wish I could remember it word for word.
One day too, when we go to our heavenly home we will be greeted and treated with honor when we receive our reward. I can’t wait!
Can you?
Blessings
