1 Samuel 8:1-3 Perverted Justice

”When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders. The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.“ 1 Samuel‬ ‭8‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

a. When Samuel was old…he made his sons judges over Israel: Samuel was one of the godliest men in the entire Bible. Yet his action here may be a sin on his part. We never have the pattern of judges being appointed by men or of the office of judge being passed from father to son. Samuel was not right to appoint his son’s judges over Israel.

b. His sons did not walk in his ways: This was why Samuel was wrong to appoint his sons asjudges over Israel. Samuel probably could not look objectively at his sons. He excused sins in them that he saw in others. (Guzik)

Perverted Justice

”And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”“ Luke‬ ‭18‬:‭6‬-‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

”The wicked accept bribes in secret to pervert the course of justice. If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good, surely to flog honest officials is not right.“

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭17‬:‭23‬, ‭26‬ ‭NIV‬‬

As we learn in the verses the Lord dislikes perverted justice and sooner or later the Lord will turn it back around on them. The widow in Luke was persistent with the dishonest judge and she finally found justice! But one day the Lord will judge the living and the dead and everything will be set right!

Lift perverted justice up to the Lord and rely on Him to make it right and He will bless you for your faith.

Do you believe that?

Blessings
