”Now there was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah; he was a Levite, and was staying there.“
Judges 17:7 NKJV
”The man departed from the city of Bethlehem in Judah to stay wherever he could find a place. Then he came to the mountains of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.“
Judges 17:8 NKJV
a. There was a young man from Bethlehem: This man, as a Levite, had cities to live in and a place established by God for him to minister. Instead, he wanted to do what was right in his own eyes and went about offering himself as a priest for hire, wherever he could find a place.
b. Then he came to Ephraim, to the house of Micah: This explains how this particular Levite and the previously-mentioned Micah crossed paths. (Guzik)
But the Lord said back in Numbers!
”Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be Mine.“
Numbers 8:14 NKJV
“The Levites were the tribe of Israelites descended from Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The priests of Israel were a group of qualified men from within the tribe of the Levites who had responsibility over aspects of tabernacle or temple worship. All priests were to be Levites, according to the Law, but not all Levites were priests.”

Why was this Levite traveling? Guzik gives us a clue, “he wanted to do what was right in his own eyes and went about offering himself as a priest for hire”.
What lesson is the Lord teaching us about Micah and the Levite?
Don’t do what is right in our own eyes, because it usually doesn’t end well!
Blessings
