17And to Adam He said:
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
from which I commanded you not to eat,
cursed is the ground because of you;
through toil you will eat of it
all the days of your life.
18Both thorns and thistles it will yield you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
What man hasn’t listened to the voice of his wife? The difference here is she enticed Adam to break a command from the Lord.
Gen 2:17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
The ground we walk on is cursed! Cursed; detestable, hateful, damned.
“through toil you will eat of it”. Toil; work extremely hard or incessantly.
We worked hard at a garden this year, but it was a dud. No potatoes, no herbs, a few beans, peas and tomatoes. Almost wasn’t worth the effort. Thanks Adam!
Thorns and thistles, who hasn’t experienced these? I recall my father and I building a brick patio and he knelt down on the ground and something poked him in the knee. That knee ended up with a staff infection and was so bad he was hospitalized and they were discussing amputation. A wise doctor came into his room and saved his leg with a regimen of antibiotics.
“and you will eat the plants of the field”
Notice he went from “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,” to plants from the field! Fruits to vegetables! No wonder I hated veggies as a child!
What thorns and thistles are you experiencing in your life?
Blessings, David
