Exodus 15:20-21 Sing to the Lord!

20Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her with tambourines and dancing. 21And Miriam sang back to them:

“Sing to the LORD,

for He is highly exalted;

the horse and rider

He has thrown into the sea.”

Miriam was the oldest sister of Moses. Possibly the only sister who released him in the Nile River in the basket as an infant.

But later she criticizes Moses and the Lords anger burns against her.

Numbers 12:1 Then Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married, for he had taken a Cushite wife.

Brethren, we are no different than Miriam! 

We proclaim to be Christian but we also sin, everyday!

Pastor Robert says if you say, “I don’t sin”, you’re a liar because you just sinned!

Exodus 15:1-19 The Lord is my strength!

1Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:

“I will sing to the LORD,

for He is highly exalted.

The horse and rider

He has thrown into the sea.

2The LORD is my strength and my song,

and He has become my salvation.

He is my God, and I will praise Him,

my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

3The LORD is a warrior,

the LORD is His name.

4Pharaoh’s chariots and army

He has thrown into the sea;

the finest of his officers

are drowned in the Red Sea.a

5The depths have covered them;

they sank there like a stone.

6Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power;

Your right hand, O LORD, has shattered the enemy.

7You overthrew Your adversaries

by Your great majesty.

You unleashed Your burning wrath;

it consumed them like stubble.

8At the blast of Your nostrils

the waters piled up;

like a wall the currents stood firm;

the depths congealed in the heart of the sea.

9The enemy declared,

‘I will pursue, I will overtake.

I will divide the spoils;

I will gorge myself on them.

I will draw my sword;

my hand will destroy them.’

10But You blew with Your breath,

and the sea covered them.

They sank like lead

in the mighty waters.

11Who among the gods is like You, O LORD?

Who is like You—majestic in holiness,

revered with praises,

performing wonders?

12You stretched out Your right hand,

and the earth swallowed them up.

13With loving devotionb You will lead

the people You have redeemed;

with Your strength You will guide them

to Your holy dwelling.

14The nations will hear and tremble;

anguish will grip the dwellers of Philistia.

15Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed;

trembling will seize the leaders of Moab;

those who dwell in Canaan will melt away,

16and terror and dread will fall on them.

By the power of Your arm

they will be as still as a stone

until Your people pass by, O LORD,

until the people You bought pass by.

17You will bring them in and plant them

on the mountain of Your inheritance—

the place, O LORD, You have prepared for Your dwelling,

the sanctuary, O Lord, Your hands have established.

18The LORD will reign forever and ever!”

19For when Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.

The first song leaves a lasting impression on book writers of the Bible!

Look deeper at Spurgeon’s quote, “It teaches us not only to praise God concerning the literal overthrow of Egypt, but to praise him concerning the overthrow of all the powers of evil, and the final deliverance of all the chosen.”

For those of us that have read and studied the whole Bible, we know that God wins! You can take it to the bank, His Promise of overthrowing evil and finial deliverance will happen and one day His chosen people, His adopted children will be in His presence!

Exodus 14:21-31 Stretch out your hand!

21Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove back the sea with a strong east wind that turned it into dry land. So the waters were divided, 22and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

23And the Egyptians chased after them—all Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen—and followed them into the sea. 24At morning watch, however, the LORD looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion. 25He caused their chariot wheels to wobble,so that they had difficulty driving. “Let us flee from the Israelites,” said the Egyptians, “for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt!”

26Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its normal state. While the Egyptians were retreating, the LORD swept them into the sea. 28The waters flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had chased the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.

29But the Israelites had walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left. 30That day the LORD saved Israel from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore. 31When Israel saw the great power that the LORD had exercised over the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and believed in Him and in His servant Moses.

There are times when we read the Bible that we cannot stop, the miracle of parting the “Reed Sea” is so great we can’t put the book down!

The Hebrew phrase for Red Seais yam suph, which clearly means “Reed Sea.”

“The term aptly describes the lake region north of the Gulf of Suez comprising the Bitter Lakes and Lake Timsah. It is possible that the Israelites went along the narrow neck of land on which Baal-zephon stood and that the Biblical Sea of Reeds was modern Lake Sirbonis. We are certain that the crossing was in this area because the Israelites found themselves in the Wilderness of Shur after crossing the sea (Exod. 15:22).” (Pfeiffer)

“Not one of them survived.”

“This is a very graphic touch, an eye-witness account. The drowned Egyptian soldiers stand for an old way of life in slavery, now gone for ever. Somehow the sight of those dead bodies was the concrete sign that salvation and a new life for Israel were now assured.” (Cole)

Some believe the Israelites picked up the Egyptians weapons of war after their drowning and used these weapons of war while on their march through the wilderness.

But I will say the Bible doesn’t tell us that and will also say if the Lord can divide a sea and provide salvation from the Egyptians to His chosen people couldn’t He also provide the weapons of war needed for their survival?

“When Israel saw the great power that the LORD had exercised over the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and believed in Him and in His servant Moses.”

“The new nation walked through a threatened death toward a new life in a consciousness of the presence and power of Jehovah from which they could not escape.” (Morgan)

Can you escape His presence and power?

Exodus 14:19-20 Pillar of cloud!

19And the Angel of God, who had gone before the camp of Israel, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them, 20so that it came between the camps of Egypt and Israel. The cloud was there in the darkness, but it lit up the night.So all night long neither camp went near the other.

“Thus the double nature of the glory of God in salvation and judgment, which later appears so frequently in Scripture, could not have been more graphically depicted.” (Kaiser)

An Angel with a mission!

Pillar of cloud, was darkness to the Egyptians and light to the Israelites! 

Salvation has the same affect on us, we see His light but the unsaved see nothing but darkness.

I contend this is a result of the heart condition, unbelief-hardened hearts equals darkness and belief-a heart for the Lord equals light.

Is your heart dark or light?

Ephesians 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding and alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of their hearts.

Exodus 14:15-18 Exercise it as well!

15Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. 16And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. Then I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army and chariots and horsemen. 18The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I am honored through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

I pray you enjoy these quotes as much as I did. I am not an eloquent person and their words speak well of these verses.

“Neither Moses nor his rod could be any effective instrument in a work which could be accomplished only by the omnipotence of God; but it was necessary that he should appear in it, in order that he might have credit in the sight of the Israelites, and that they might see that God had chosen him to be the instrument of their deliverance.” (Clarke)

How many times have we’ve been inactive when the Lord moved us to be active?

Spurgeon’s quote says it well, “but exercise it as well”!

Who likes to exercise? Get up and perform some holy activity!

Exodus 14:10-14 Be Still!

10As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and they were terrified and cried out to the LORD. 11They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12Did we not say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

13But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. 14The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

“Humanly speaking, they might easily overcome the unarmed and encumbered Israelites, who could not be supposed to be able to make any resistance against cavalryand war-chariots.” (Clarke)

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in times of trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear,

When your time of trouble is upon you, remember Psalm 46, God is our refuge!

Is He yours?

Years ago I had broken my wrist and needed surgery. I turned it over to the Lord. I had never felt such peace about anything. When surgery time came they had given me a “pic” in my arm to numb it for the operation. I had fallen asleep after praying and leaving the surgery to the Lord. During the operation I was awoken by the doctor yelling at me saying, “David wake up and stop snoring, I’m at a crucial point in the operation!

“Do not be afraid...The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Be still and know He is the Lord!

Exodus 14:5-9 Fists Raised in Defiance!

5When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have released Israel from serving us.”

6So Pharaoh prepared his chariot and took his army with him. 7He took 600 of the best chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.

8And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out with fists raised in defiance. 9The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops—pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi-hahiroth, opposite Baal-zephon.

“This is not merely his personal chariot. The meaning is probably ‘his chariotry’, a collective.” (Cole)

“fists raised in defiance”!

Who was the army raising their fists in defiance to?

Answer, the Lord!

Satan pursues us constantly like the pharaoh with fists raised in defiance, because he doesn’t like to loose! 

And when we give in to the sin, Satan wins and we loose.

Can we also say; our fists (are) raised in defiance to the Lord?

Anytime we sin we are defying the Lord’s will for us.

Do you have a secret sin in your life?

On the day of judgement it won’t be a secret anymore!
