Past Pain. Genesis 42:1-5 NLT

For a long time after my mother died, the expression "you just gave me a heart attack" or some variation upset me. It triggered the memory of the morning she died and I relived the pain each time I heard that phrase.  In time that phrase lost it's sting.

As we go through life, we experience more of these painful experiences and accumulate hidden phrases that can bring back the pain we felt in that moment in time. God has been reminding me this past week to watch my words. He's been using  Ephesians to remind me. Ephesians 4:29b says "Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. " I don't want my words to remind people of their past pain.

Joseph's brothers must have bristled every time the word's Egypt or Joseph were mentioned. When they sold Joseph they must have known that's probably where he ended up. Now, in order to save their lives and the lives of their family, they had to go to the land who's name brought fear and regret to their hearts.

Genesis 42:1-5 NLT

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

1 When Jacob heard that grain was available in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you standing around looking at one another? 2 I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy enough grain to keep us alive. Otherwise we’ll die.”

3 So Joseph’s ten older brothers went down to Egypt to buy grain.  4 But Jacob wouldn’t let Joseph’s younger brother, Benjamin, go with them, for fear some harm might come to him.  5 So Jacob’s  sons arrived in Egypt along with others to buy food, for the famine was in Canaan as well.

Revelation 16 - The seventh bowl of wrath!

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath
17Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came from the throne in the temple, saying, “It is done!”
18And there were flashes of lightning, and rumblings, and rolls of thunder, and a great earthquake, the likes of which had not occurred since men were upon the earth—so mighty was the great quake. 19The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. And God remembered Babylon the great and gave her the cup of the wine of the fury of His wrath.
20Then every island fled, and no mountain could be found. 21And huge hailstones, about a hundred pounds each,a rained down on them from above. And men cursed God for the plague of hail, because it was so horrendous.

It is done! God has stretched out His mercy but the trumpet blows, the last bowl is poured.
God stuck His fork in it as says it is done!

A great earthquake, the likes of which had not occurred since men were upon the earth!
It pretty much flattens the whole earth! No more islands, no more mountains, no more caves, no more places to hide.

Then judgement comes in the form of 100 pound hail stones!
Nowhere to hide from His judgement!

“Well, if I were afflicted I might be converted. If I lay sick I might be saved.’ Oh, do not think so. Sickness and sorrow of themselves are no helps to salvation. Pain and poverty are not evangelists; disease and despair are not apostles. Look at the lost in hell. Suffering has effected no good in them. He that was filthy here is filthy there. He that was unjust in this life is unjust in the life to come. There is nothing in pain and suffering that, by their own natural operation, will tend to purification.” (Spurgeon)

Why are these men hearts so hard?

Revelation 16 - The sixth bowl!

12Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East.
13And I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs, coming from the mouths of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. 14These are demonic spirits that perform signs and go out to all the kings of the earth, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God, the Almighty.
15“Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who remains awake and clothed, so that he will not go naked and let his shame be exposed.”
16And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

The sixth bowl of wrath dries up the Euphrates river?
Last year our pastor taught on Battles of End Times.
Drying up of the Euphrates river is key to the armies of the world coming in from the east to destroy Jerusalem.

16And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.
Jezreel Valley is 20 miles long and 14 miles wide.
Napoleon said of this valley:
“All the armies of the world could maneuver their forces on this vast plain...there is no place in the world more suited for war than this...it is the most natural battleground on the whole earth.”

Psalm 2:2 (NKJV)
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

God is giving you a glimpse into the future. Knowing the future, how will you live your life today?

21. Showed compassion.

22. Brought a message of deliverance in prison.

Wow.

Genesis 41:45-57 NLT

45 Then Pharaoh gave Joseph a new Egyptian name, Zaphenath-paneah.  He also gave him a wife, whose name was Asenath. She was the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On. So Joseph took charge of the entire land of Egypt.  46 He was thirty years old when he began serving in the court of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. And when Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence, he inspected the entire land of Egypt.

47 As predicted, for seven years the land produced bumper crops.  48 During those years, Joseph gathered all the crops grown in Egypt and stored the grain from the surrounding fields in the cities.  49 He piled up huge amounts of grain like sand on the seashore. Finally, he stopped keeping records because there was too much to measure.

50 During this time, before the first of the famine years, two sons were born to Joseph and his wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On.  51 Joseph named his older son Manasseh,  for he said, “God has made me forget all my troubles and everyone in my father’s family.”  52 Joseph named his second son Ephraim,  for he said, “God has made me fruitful in this land of my grief.”

53 At last the seven years of bumper crops throughout the land of Egypt came to an end.  54 Then the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had predicted. The famine also struck all the surrounding countries, but throughout Egypt there was plenty of food.  55 Eventually, however, the famine spread throughout the land of Egypt as well. And when the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, he told them, “Go to Joseph, and do whatever he tells you.”  56 So with severe famine everywhere, Joseph opened up the storehouses and distributed grain to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe throughout the land of Egypt.  57 And people from all around came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph because the famine was severe throughout the world.

Revelation 16 - The fifth bowl of wrath!

10And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and men began to gnaw their tongues in anguish 11and curse the God of heaven for their pains and sores; yet they did not repent of their deeds.

The fourth bowl of wrath, they began to gnaw at their tongues!
This reminds me of a song, the twelve days of Christmas!
Let’s redo it!

The first bowl of wrath and my true Lord said to me, loathsome, malignant sores broke out on those who had the mark of the beast!

The second bowl of wrath and my true Lord said to me, turned to blood like that of the dead, and every living thing in the sea died!

The third bowl of wrath and my true Lord said to me, rivers and springs of water, and they turned to blood!

The fourth bowl of wrath and my true Lord said to me, the sun, and it was given power to scorch the people with fire!

The fifth bowl of wrath and my true Lord said to me, on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and men began to gnaw their tongues in anguish!

And with all this they remained stubborn and STILL did not repent! “and curse the God of heaven for their pains and sores; yet they did not repent of their deeds.”

Do you repent daily for your (deeds)  sins, or are you stubborn too?

Joseph's Big Break. Genesis 41:14-32 NLT

Joseph finally has a chance to get out of prison. He's been presented with a "get out of jail free card" so to speak. Joseph didn't ask for anything in return, he didn't seek personal benefit in exchange for the interpretation, he didn't inquire about his fate after he is finished with the interpretation. Nope, Joseph didn't ask "What's in it for me?" First thing Joseph does is give God the glory. "God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.”

How many times do we give glory to God first? How many times do we accept the glory and not give any of it to God? How many times do we fail Him? If you're anything like me, you probably fail Him everyday. But isn't it great our God knows our failings and loves us anyway?

Genesis 41:14-32 NLT

14 Pharaoh sent for Joseph at once, and he was quickly brought from the prison. After he shaved and changed his clothes, he went in and stood before Pharaoh.  15 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream last night, and no one here can tell me what it means. But I have heard that when you hear about a dream you can interpret it.”

16 “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.”

17 So Pharaoh told Joseph his dream. “In my dream,” he said, “I was standing on the bank of the Nile River,  18 and I saw seven fat, healthy cows come up out of the river and begin grazing in the marsh grass.  19 But then I saw seven sick-looking cows, scrawny and thin, come up after them. I’ve never seen such sorry-looking animals in all the land of Egypt.  20 These thin, scrawny cows ate the seven fat cows.  21 But afterward you wouldn’t have known it, for they were still as thin and scrawny as before! Then I woke up.

22 “Then I fell asleep again, and I had another dream. This time I saw seven heads of grain, full and beautiful, growing on a single stalk.  23 Then seven more heads of grain appeared, but these were blighted, shriveled, and withered by the east wind.  24 And the shriveled heads swallowed the seven healthy heads. I told these dreams to the magicians, but no one could tell me what they mean.”

25 Joseph responded, “Both of Pharaoh’s dreams mean the same thing. God is telling Pharaoh in advance what he is about to do.  26 The seven healthy cows and the seven healthy heads of grain both represent seven years of prosperity.  27 The seven thin, scrawny cows that came up later and the seven thin heads of grain, withered by the east wind, represent seven years of famine.

28 “This will happen just as I have described it, for God has revealed to Pharaoh in advance what he is about to do.  29 The next seven years will be a period of great prosperity throughout the land of Egypt.  30 But afterward there will be seven years of famine so great that all the prosperity will be forgotten in Egypt. Famine will destroy the land.  31 This famine will be so severe that even the memory of the good years will be erased.  32 As for having two similar dreams, it means that these events have been decreed by God, and He will soon make them happen.

Revelation 16 - The fourth bowl of wrath!

8Next, the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given power to scorch the people with fire. 9And the people were scorched by intense heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues; yet they did not repent and give Him glory.

Global warming anyone? Foe every scientist that claims there is global warming you can find two that claim there isn’t. Several years ago there was a email system that was hacked and the emails were released worldwide. What they revealed was global warming was a scam. They discussed how they fudged scientific data to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes. These people didn’t read the Bible though.
Because if they did, they would see real global warming in these verses were caused by God and no mater what you did or tried there is no escape!

“9And the people were scorched by intense heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues; yet they did not repent and give Him glory.”

God was giving them a chance to repent. But instead the people cursed the name of God!

Are you mad at God because of something that occurred in your life? You have two choices, curse the name of God or accept His love and salvation. The Bible is full of examples. Joseph is one that comes to mind, sold as a slave by his brothers, falsely imprisoned but God was with him because he was with God.

Are you with God?
