”Now David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten women, his concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in seclusion and supported them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.“ II Samuel 20:3 NKJV
a. Put them in seclusion: Absalom raped these ten concubines as part of his rebellion against David (2 Samuel 16:20-23). Upon his return, David set them aside as unfortunate victims of Absalom’s sin.
i. “He could not well divorce them; he could not punish them, as they were not in the transgression; and he could no more be familiar with them because they had been defiled by his son. To have married them to other men might have been dangerous to the state.” (Clarke)
b. They were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood: The sad fate of David’s ten concubines is an example of how our sin often has horrible effects on others. They suffered because of Absalom’s sin – and David’s sin. (Guzik)
Horrible Effects
Sin has horrible effects on others and if you believe it doesn’t just study the Bible or look around what is going in the world.
I am reminded of a verse: ”If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.”“ Genesis 4:7 BSB
We must master it to keep horrible effects of sin away.
When has the horrible effects of sin worked out well for anyone?
Blessings
