”Then the woman said to him, “Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?” And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, “As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.”“
I Samuel 28:9-10 NKJV
a. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die? The medium wondered if this was a government “sting” operation, but Saul assured her – swearing in the name of the LORD, no less – that she would not be punished.
b. Saul swore to her by the LORD: Saul’s oath in the name of the LORD reminds us that spiritual jargon means nothing. As certainly as the LORD lives Saul was in complete disobedience and darkness. This is the last time Saul used the name of the LORD in the book of 1 Samuel and he used it to swear to a medium that she will not be punished. (Guzik)
Swearing in the name of the LORD!
”And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.“ Leviticus 19:12 NKJV
Saul was using the Lords name for spiritual jargon!
Dammit isn’t God’s last name! Why do actors throw it out like word candy in movies?
What about oaths? Jesus said:
”But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment.“ James 5:12 NKJV
Are we honoring the Lord today with our words and actions?
Blessings
