”Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, “I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. And he inquired of the Lord for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”“ I Samuel 22:9-10 NKJV
a. Doeg the Edomite: This man was last seen in 1 Samuel 21:7 in Nob, at the tabernacle at the same time David came there.
b. He inquired of the LORD for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath: Doeg implicated the priest Ahimelech as David’s accomplice. “Look at all the help Ahimelech gave David. Surely, they are working together against you Saul, and Ahimelech probably knows exactly where David is and where he is going.”
i. Doeg was more than an ambitious man looking to promote himself. He also knew how to divert Saul’s anger and suspicion from his own staff to the priests. (Guzik)
Ambitious Man
Doeg will fit two of these descriptions in the following verses!
”Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.“
Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV
Doeg threw the priests under the bus, and we will soon study it doesn’t end well for them!
I’ve been guilty of ambition for seeking a promotion at work for the wrong reasons when I should have been grateful where the good Lord had placed me.
You know the old saying, hindsight is 20/20.
Have you ever been guilty of ambition?
Blessings
