10Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed with all manner of good things from his master in hand. And he set out for Nahor’s hometown in Mesopotamia. 11As evening approached, he made the camels kneel down near the well outside the town, at the time when the women went out to draw water.
12“O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14Now may it happen that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
The journey the servant took to Mesopotamia was about 900 miles on the most common traveled route.
He prayed and asked for a sign, that she will respond, “Drink, and I will water your camels as well”.
A camel can drink up to twenty gallons, times ten camels in the caravan equals 200 gallons of water drawn from the well! A daunting task indeed, especially to be performed for a stranger. At least one hour of work.
One time I was plowing my driveway and high centered my truck in snow, someone was driving by in a car and offered to get his truck to pull me out. I had been digging for a hour. His help was a blessing. “You have shown kindness” to me!
So when I’ve been driving my truck and see a disabled vehicle stuck in snow I stop and pull them out. It’s not always convenient, I may not be dressed for the job but do it anyway.
Has the Lord ever prompted you to perform a task for a stranger that would cost you an hour or more out of your day?
Blessings, David
