I married into a family with a lot of food restrictions. My mother in law was diabetic, my father in law allergic to egg whites. David's brother has to carefully watch his sodium intake and David and two of his sisters have celiac disease. In addition to no wheat, David doesn't tolerate rice or corn. Needless to say, family get togethers can be complicated.
Paul is telling Timothy that those who think they are more spiritual by not marrying or following dietary restrictions are committing the sin of pride. Not only do they believe they are more spiritual then other people, they are trying to exalt themselves above God.
When we think we know better then God, when we try to put ourselves above others with rituals, we are on a very precarious road and destined to crash. Instead, we need to humble ourselves and follow His ways. It really is a much easier road.
1 Timothy 4:3-5 NLT
3 They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. 4Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. 5 For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer.
Blessings, Cecilia
